Matthew Schaefer Named NHL Rookie of the Month for October
New York Islanders defenceman Matthew Schaefer received the title of NHL’s Rookie of the Month for October, an announcement made on Saturday. This recognition comes after Schaefer’s impressive performance, where he tallied three goals and five assists over 11 games, ranking him third among all rookies in points.
The 18-year-old, hailing from Hamilton, was the first overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft. In his debut, Schaefer made history by becoming the youngest player to register a point, achieving this milestone at just 18 years and 34 days. He surpassed the previous record held by Scott Niedermayer, who was 18 years and 46 days old when he accomplished the same feat.
Schaefer’s early success sets him apart in the league. Only one other 18-year-old defenceman, Phil Housley, achieved more points in his first 11 NHL games, finishing with 11 points during the 1982-83 season with the Buffalo Sabres. Schaefer’s performance this season has included a six-game point streak to kick off his career, featuring two goals and five assists within that span.
In addition to his points, Schaefer netted his first game-winning goal against the San Jose Sharks on October 21, solidifying his status as a standout rookie. He received this recognition over notable competitors, including teammates from the Montreal Canadiens such as Jakub Dobes, Ivan Demidov, and Oliver Kapanen, as well as Detroit Red Wings centre Emmitt Finnie, Minnesota Wild defenceman Zeev Buium, and St. Louis Blues winger Jimmy Snuggerud.
Schaefer’s achievements have captured the attention of fans and analysts alike, highlighting his potential impact on the league as he continues his rookie season. As the NHL progresses, all eyes will be on Schaefer to see if he can maintain this impressive trajectory and further etch his name in the history books.
