James Nelson Wins 2014 GMC Sierra in Summer Free Ride Contest
The Summer Free Ride contest culminated on August 25, 2025, at Little Red Park, where participants gathered for a chance to win a 2014 GMC Sierra. A total of 101 qualifiers surrounded the custom-painted truck, which had been showcased throughout the summer by local stations Power 99 and Beach Radio. Each qualifier took turns selecting keys from a bag, with the goal of unlocking the vehicle.
The excitement peaked when James Nelson became the 25th qualifier. After selecting key #62, he successfully unlocked the chest, securing his prize. “I knew I’d get a chance at a key, but it’s just the luck of the drawing,” Nelson remarked. “I had no idea that I would be walking away with a new vehicle.”
This win is particularly special for Nelson, as it marks his family’s second vehicle victory. In 2014, he and his wife won a Dodge Ram through a ticket purchased at their local church, Sacred Heart Cathedral. With their previous vehicle beginning to show signs of wear, winning this truck significantly alleviates their upcoming expenses. “It gives me a little bit more freedom. My truck is starting to give me some troubles, so this is something new to drive,” he added.
In addition to the GMC Sierra, Nelson received a range of prizes, including a brand new Giant Mountain Bike, a Blackstone Portable Grill, a $500 Meat Package, and a Studded Winter Tire Package.
The Summer Free Ride contest, now in its 15th year, relies heavily on local sponsorships. Jocelyn Zawacki, Retail Sales Supervisor for Beach Radio, expressed her gratitude for the community support. “We couldn’t do this contest without the support of our local sponsors. Every year we’re blown away by the support we receive from them,” she stated.
As the event wrapped up, the community celebrated not just Nelson’s good fortune but also the spirit of collaboration and generosity that defines the Summer Free Ride contest.
