Canada’s Job Market Faces Challenges for Gen Z Workers
Concerns are mounting over the future of Canada’s job market, particularly for the Gen Z workforce. A recent survey reveals that approximately 25 percent of Canadians are uncertain about their employment prospects for 2026. This statistic, highlighted by Kevin Kliman, co-founder of the HR platform Humi and now president of Canadian Business at Employment Hero, underscores a growing anxiety among workers in the country.
During a recent episode of the BetaKit Podcast, Kliman discussed the implications of these findings, noting that the fear of layoffs is influencing major financial decisions for many Canadians. The survey shows that nearly the same percentage of respondents are postponing significant financial commitments due to job insecurity.
The data is particularly troubling for Gen Z workers. According to the survey, 46 percent of Gen Z employees feel their current positions do not align with their career aspirations. Additionally, 55 percent of these young workers are actively seeking new job opportunities in the upcoming year, reflecting a strong desire for change in their employment situations.
Kliman attributes this trend to three primary factors: the effects of tariffs, the rise of artificial intelligence affecting entry-level roles, and a broader industry push for a return to traditional office environments. These macro trends are reshaping the job landscape, leaving many young professionals feeling uncertain about their future.
As Gen Z navigates this challenging environment, Kliman offers insights on how they can enhance their prospects. He emphasizes the importance of adapting to emerging technologies, particularly AI, which is increasingly influencing various sectors. Kliman also notes a notable trend of young Canadian entrepreneurs exploring opportunities beyond the country’s borders, suggesting a shift in entrepreneurial ambitions.
As Canada moves forward, the job market’s evolution will demand adaptability and resilience from its workforce. Understanding the current landscape and preparing for future changes will be crucial for young professionals aiming to secure fulfilling employment in the years to come.
For those interested in further exploration of these topics, the BetaKit Podcast continues to provide valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of the Canadian job market and beyond.
