Utah Partners with TerraPower to Seek Nuclear Reactor Sites
Utah has announced a partnership with TerraPower LLC, a company backed by Bill Gates, to identify potential sites for a new nuclear reactor. This initiative aims to address the increasing demand for electricity in the state, particularly from data centers and other energy-intensive facilities. Governor Spencer Cox emphasized the urgency of the situation during an interview on Bloomberg TV, stating, “I don’t think most people comprehend the amount of power that’s going to be needed right now.”
The collaboration highlights the growing energy requirements spurred by advancements in technologies such as artificial intelligence and the broader electrification of the economy in the United States. According to Governor Cox, a single data center campus in Utah alone requires approximately four gigawatts of electricity, underscoring the need for reliable and sustainable energy sources.
Agreement and Development Plans
This agreement involves a memorandum of understanding between TerraPower, Utah’s Office of Energy Development, and Flagship Companies, a local land development firm. The goal is to provide site recommendations by the end of the year. TerraPower, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, is working on an advanced nuclear reactor design that employs liquid sodium as a coolant, offering an innovative alternative to traditional water-cooled systems.
In June 2024, TerraPower initiated the construction of a demonstration system in Wyoming, located near a retiring coal plant. While the company has received approval for the non-nuclear components of the project, it is currently awaiting a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to proceed with the reactor itself. To date, TerraPower has successfully raised $650 million to support the Wyoming project, with backing from notable investors, including NVentures, the investment arm of Nvidia Corp.
The revival of interest in nuclear energy marks a significant shift in the energy landscape, as policymakers and industry leaders increasingly recognize its potential as a stable, carbon-free power source. Even figures such as former President Donald Trump have voiced support for nuclear energy initiatives, indicating a broader acceptance of this technology in the context of climate change and energy security.
As the collaboration between Utah and TerraPower unfolds, it could pave the way for a new era of nuclear energy in the United States, which many see as essential for meeting future energy demands while addressing environmental concerns. The state of Utah is keen to position itself at the forefront of this energy transition, aiming to balance growth with sustainability.
