Scientists Revive Edison’s Battery, Smart Undies Track Flatulence
Research in February has unveiled several fascinating scientific advancements, including the revival of a historic battery design by Thomas Edison and innovative technologies for health monitoring. These stories highlight the intersection of historical concepts and modern technology, showcasing how past ideas can be reimagined for contemporary applications.
Reviving Edison’s Battery Design
At the beginning of the 20th century, electric vehicles powered by lead-acid batteries were more prevalent than gas-powered cars. Thomas Edison envisioned a nickel-iron battery capable of extending the driving range of electric vehicles to 100 miles. An international team of scientists has revitalized this concept, creating a modern version of the nickel-iron battery, as reported in the journal Small.
The researchers drew inspiration from nature, particularly from how shellfish develop their protective shells. They utilized proteins from beef byproducts combined with graphene oxide to form a scaffolding for the battery. By superheating the mixture and subsequently baking it, they transformed the proteins into carbon, leading to the creation of an aerogel structure. The resulting prototype recharges in seconds and can endure over 12,000 cycles, equating to about 30 years of daily use.
While the storage capacity of this new battery is currently lower than that of lithium-ion batteries, it shows potential for storing excess electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar farms.
Smart Underwear Measures Flatulence
Addressing a unique health concern, researchers at the University of Maryland have developed “smart underwear” equipped with sensors to measure flatulence. The device, which attaches to regular underwear, tracks gas emissions throughout the day, including during sleep, as detailed in a study published in Biosensors and Bioelectronics.
This innovation offers a more reliable method to quantify flatulence, particularly for individuals with conditions that lead to excessive gas production. Previous studies relied on self-reports, often resulting in inconsistent data. The new smart underwear recorded an average of 32 flatulence episodes per day among healthy adults, contrasting sharply with earlier estimates of just 14. The researchers aim to establish a baseline for normal gas production through their ongoing project, the Human Flatus Atlas.
Astrophysical Discoveries and Ancient Games
In a significant astrophysical finding, astronomers have studied a star in the Andromeda Galaxy that appeared to vanish, likely collapsing into a black hole without going through a supernova phase. This phenomenon, observed by NASA’s NEOWISE project, raises intriguing questions about stellar evolution and the lifecycle of massive stars. The research, published in Science, suggests that some stars may collapse directly into black holes, creating a new class of astronomical objects that are more challenging to detect.
Meanwhile, researchers from Michigan State University have explored the origins of ancient board games, using artificial intelligence to hypothesize the rules of a potentially new Roman game. The discovery centers on a stone from the Roman Museum in Heerlen, Netherlands, with distinct wear patterns indicative of game play. By simulating thousands of games, the researchers identified various rule possibilities, proposing the name Ludos Coriovalli for this ancient game.
Neuroscience and Gaming
In an innovative leap within neuroscience, the company Cortical Labs has showcased its ability to make brain cells grown in a dish learn to play video games. Following their previous success with the game Pong, the team has now demonstrated that their brain cells can also learn to play a modified version of Doom, known as Freedoom. This advancement indicates that biological neural networks can learn and adapt more rapidly than traditional silicon-based systems.
As scientists continue to explore these diverse topics, the ongoing intersection of historical concepts with emerging technologies and innovative research underscores the dynamic nature of scientific inquiry. These stories reveal not only advancements in their respective fields but also hint at future applications that could reshape our understanding of energy, health, and beyond.
