NASA Prepares for Historic Moon Mission as Rocket Rolls Out
NASA is set to make history as it prepares to send four astronauts on a journey around the Moon with the rollout of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The rocket is scheduled to leave its assembly building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida early on Saturday, February 3, 2024, around 07:00 EST (11:00 UTC). This significant event marks a crucial step for the Artemis II mission, which will be the first crewed flight to the Moon’s vicinity since the last Apollo lunar landing in December 1972.
The SLS, along with its mobile launch platform, will be transported to Launch Complex 39B, a journey of approximately four miles that is expected to take between eight to ten hours. The vehicle, weighing 11 million pounds and certified by Guinness as the world’s heaviest self-propelled vehicle, will move at a slow pace of under one mile per hour.
Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, NASA’s launch director for Artemis II, explained, “It’ll be a little slower around the turns and up the hill.” This rollout is not just a routine procedure; it is an emotional moment for the NASA team. “These are the kinds of days that we live for when you do the kind of work that we do,” said John Honeycutt, chair of NASA’s Mission Management Team for Artemis II.
Setting the Stage for Exploration
Artemis II will not land on the lunar surface but will take its crew—comprising Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—around the far side of the Moon. This mission aims to set a record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from Earth, culminating in a high-speed reentry over the Pacific Ocean. The astronauts will reach speeds of approximately 25,000 mph (40,000 km/h), surpassing previous records set during the Apollo missions.
The roots of the Artemis program date back to 2019, but its components have been in development for over two decades. The initiative is designed to return astronauts to the Moon and lay the groundwork for future exploration. The SLS rocket, which costs over $2 billion per flight, is central to this mission. While NASA plans to utilize the SLS for several more missions, the agency is also exploring commercial options for future lunar landers and spacesuits.
Geopolitical factors are motivating the urgency of the Artemis II mission. With China aiming to land astronauts on the Moon by 2030, U.S. officials are keen to establish a presence on the lunar surface, emphasizing national prestige and access to lunar resources.
Countdown to Launch
As the rollout progresses, the mission team will focus on final preparations and checks at the launch pad. In early February, NASA’s launch team will conduct a Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR), a critical practice countdown that involves loading super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into the rocket. This rehearsal is crucial, especially after challenges faced during the Artemis I mission, which successfully launched in November 2022.
If all goes well, NASA could launch Artemis II as early as February 6, 2024. The timing of the launch is delicate, as the agency typically has about five days each month to launch based on the Moon’s position relative to Earth. Subsequent launch windows are available later in the month, but if Artemis II does not launch by February 11, NASA may have to wait until March 6 for the next opportunities.
The Artemis II mission is a pivotal step toward establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon. “We’ll be validating the Orion spacecraft’s life support, navigation, and crew systems in the really harsh environments of deep space,” Honeycutt noted. This mission will not only test the spacecraft’s capabilities but also pave the way for future lunar landings.
As NASA finalizes preparations, the astronauts are completing their training at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The excitement surrounding the mission is palpable, with team members keenly aware of the historic implications. Honeycutt emphasized, “I consider that a duty and a trust, and it’s one I intend to see through.”
With Artemis II, NASA aims not just to return to the Moon, but also to inspire a new generation of exploration and discovery.
