Toronto Raptors rookie Collin Murray-Boyles delivered an impressive performance during the team’s 118-100 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on January 6, 2026. Filling in for the injured Jakob Poeltl, who is sidelined due to a sore lower back, Murray-Boyles contributed significantly with 17 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. His defensive prowess was highlighted by three steals, two blocks, and a team-leading plus-24 defensive rating.

Murray-Boyles has adopted a straightforward approach to his rookie season: hard work. “If you’re not tired, you’re not going hard enough, so I try to be as tired as possible,” he remarked, laughing at the intensity he brings to the game.

Coach Darko Rajakovic confirmed pre-game that Poeltl had been cleared for contact, but Murray-Boyles has stepped up admirably in his absence. The six-foot-seven forward, selected ninth overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, has transitioned from his previous role as a power forward at the South Carolina Gamecocks to playing center for the Raptors.

Prior to the game against Atlanta, Murray-Boyles averaged 6.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 18.8 minutes per game. However, his playing time has increased significantly, with at least 24 minutes in each of his last five games. Rajakovic praised the young player’s development, noting that understanding his capabilities takes time. “We’re constantly learning about Collin, what he can do… It’s really impressive, his development,” he stated.

Murray-Boyles’ defensive strategy is equally straightforward. “It’s mostly just not having your hands by your side, like, that helps a lot with it,” he explained. His emphasis on being active with hands raised has proven effective, especially when combined with the defensive synergy he shares with teammate Scottie Barnes.

Barnes, who is slightly taller and lighter than Murray-Boyles, acknowledged their complementary skills. “When we’re out there on the floor, we see a screen come together, we do a great job of when we want to switch,” he said. Their ability to adapt based on the game plan has made them an effective defensive duo.

Murray-Boyles looks up to Barnes, the 2022 NBA Rookie of the Year, and admires his defensive versatility. “He brings energy. He’s probably the best defensive player based off of just his versatility and his effort,” Murray-Boyles said. This admiration drives him to emulate Barnes’ playstyle as he strives to improve.

With this victory, the Raptors improved their record to 22-15 and will take their two-game winning streak to Charlotte for their next match. The continued growth of emerging players like Murray-Boyles is promising for the team as they navigate the season.
