Gen Z Turns to AI for Emotional Support: Risks and Impacts
Increasingly, members of Generation Z are turning to generative artificial intelligence (AI) not only for productivity and entertainment but also for emotional support. Tools like ChatGPT, initially designed as productivity assistants, have evolved into digital confidants for many young users. This trend raises questions about the implications of relying on AI for emotional companionship, particularly in light of the mental health challenges facing this generation.
Since its public debut in late 2022, ChatGPT has seen remarkable growth, reaching 100 million users within two months. By early 2025, the number of weekly active users surged to 800 million, reflecting a significant increase from 400 million just months earlier. A large portion of these users are under 25, underscoring Gen Z’s pivotal role in driving AI adoption.
The rise of AI as an emotional outlet comes against the backdrop of a mental health crisis among young people. According to a report by The Jed Foundation, 42% of Gen Z respondents report experiencing persistent sadness or hopelessness. With limited access to affordable therapy and overwhelmed mental health systems, the appeal of a free, always-available AI that mimics empathy is understandable. However, experts caution that while AI offers a convenient outlet, it may not provide the therapeutic value that many users seek.
AI’s allure as an emotional companion stems from its perceived neutrality. Users appreciate that AI does not interrupt, judge, or retain memories unless prompted. Yet, this simulation of safety can mask deeper issues. Research indicates that heavy users of AI platforms like ChatGPT often report feelings of loneliness, suggesting that the emotional connection provided by AI may be superficial.
In a study published in Psychology Today, it was noted that AI companions could potentially exacerbate feelings of isolation over time. By presenting an idealized version of human interaction—free from conflict or disappointment—AI may set unrealistic expectations for real-life relationships. Some users have begun to express concerns about developing an emotional dependence on these chatbots.
The impact of AI is also evident in professional contexts. Young employees, especially those in remote or hybrid work environments, increasingly rely on AI tools to craft emails, prepare for performance reviews, and navigate challenging conversations. While this reliance can alleviate anxiety, it may simultaneously erode interpersonal confidence and contribute to social isolation. The efficiency gained through AI may come at the cost of spontaneous human interactions, as casual conversations are replaced by structured digital communications.
As AI technology advances, its role in the emotional lives of Gen Z continues to grow. Users are personalizing their interactions, assigning names and backstories to AI systems like Replika, Character.AI, and tailored versions of ChatGPT. While these platforms can create striking emotional realism, they also pose risks. Many users have reported feeling more alone after deep engagement with AI “friends,” highlighting the potential drawbacks of idealized interactions.
Despite the increasing emotional reliance on AI, there are no regulations governing how generative AI manages mental health conversations. Tools like ChatGPT are not trained mental health professionals and often fail to recognize signs of distress accurately. A notable incident in 2024 in France involved a young user who received inadequate AI responses during a mental health crisis, raising ethical concerns about the role of AI in providing emotional support.
As technology companies distance themselves from responsibility, the growing regulatory gap becomes increasingly apparent. The legal and ethical complexities surrounding AI as a form of emotional care present significant risks. For some individuals, particularly those in underserved communities, ChatGPT may offer essential connection. For others, it poses a danger of weakening emotional resilience.
The core question is not whether AI should assist with emotional support but whether it should replace human empathy. AI companionship can be beneficial, yet it necessitates clear boundaries. As Gen Z increasingly seeks validation and understanding from AI, society must confront whether this reliance alleviates loneliness or embeds it more deeply into daily life. Understanding these dynamics will be crucial in navigating the evolving relationship between technology and emotional well-being.
