Apple Watch Alerts Woman to Brain Tumor, Saves Her Life

A 57-year-old woman from Brighton, East Sussex, credits her Apple Watch with alerting her to a serious health issue, ultimately leading to the discovery of a brain tumor. This incident highlights the device’s potential to provide critical health insights through its advanced monitoring features.
Sam Adams returned from a trip to Costa Rica when her Apple Watch began alerting her to an unusually low heart rate. Initially attributing this to stress, jet lag, and exhaustion, Adams was also grappling with personal losses, including the death of a parent and a pet, as well as a recent divorce. Despite her assumptions, the persistent alerts prompted her to seek medical advice.
After visiting a pharmacist to check her blood pressure, additional tests revealed a treatable heart condition that likely caused the low heart rate notifications. The situation escalated when Adams reported experiencing constant headaches, leading her doctors to recommend a CT scan. The scan ultimately revealed the presence of a brain tumor, necessitating ongoing medical management.
Adams now requires regular monitoring, including daily medication and periodic scans to assess the tumor’s progress. Despite the uncertainty surrounding her health, she feels fortunate for the timely intervention facilitated by her Apple Watch.
“I am so grateful for my Apple Watch,” Adams stated. “I don’t know what would have happened if it had not gone off. I still live with the tumor, but I’m well, managing it, and grateful that technology gave me the early warning I didn’t know I needed.”
This case underscores the growing importance of wearable technology in health management, demonstrating how devices like the Apple Watch can play a crucial role in early detection of serious medical conditions. As consumers increasingly rely on such technology, the potential for life-saving alerts continues to expand.
