AI Innovations Address Patient-Care Crisis in Healthcare
The healthcare sector is exploring innovative solutions to combat a growing patient-care crisis, as rising demand and decreasing clinical capacity strain hospital resources. Companies like Microsoft and Andor Health are advocating for the use of agentic AI technologies, showcasing early successes at the Think AI Conference. Their collaboration with Sentara Health has yielded promising results, indicating that AI could play a vital role in alleviating current challenges within the healthcare system.
Modern hospitals are grappling with prolonged wait times, increased clinician burnout, and a shortage of nursing hours. Reports indicate significant workforce departures and heightened pressures from public health issues, including behavioral health needs and the complexities of chronic diseases. To stabilize operations, many health systems are increasingly adopting AI-enabled tools to streamline documentation, facilitate care coordination, and extend the reach of clinical teams.
The trend is shifting towards viewing AI not as a replacement for human labor, but as a vital support mechanism. Health systems are now exploring how virtual support models and ambient technology can enhance existing staff capabilities and address operational bottlenecks. Platforms like ThinkAndor®, developed by Andor Health under the leadership of Raj Toleti, are gaining traction for their ability to assist nursing teams by minimizing administrative burdens and enabling real-time documentation through voice and natural language interfaces.
One notable example of successful implementation comes from Sentara Health, a major not-for-profit integrated health system in the U.S. Earlier this year, Sentara signed an expanded agreement to license ThinkAndor®. This partnership aims to build virtual care capabilities across 12 hospitals and a workforce of approximately 34,000 employees. Andor Health’s teams, including Pritesh and Chief Product Officer Srini Surendranath, worked closely with Sentara to customize the technology to fit each facility’s workflows and infrastructure.
Since the implementation of ThinkAndor®, Sentara has reported over 44,000 virtual nursing sessions, contributing more than 11,000 hours of virtual assistance for frontline teams. Operational improvements include a notable increase in early-day discharge rates, with nearly 18% of system-wide discharges occurring before 1 p.m. The initiative has also enabled Sentara to activate 1,742 beds across its system and recover thousands of nursing hours, a success attributed to both workflow redesign and the integration of virtual care.
These promising developments will be highlighted at the upcoming Think AI Conference, scheduled for November 16–19, 2023, in Orlando, Florida. The event will bring together hospital executives, virtual nursing leaders, developers, and AI researchers to discuss the implications of agentic and ambient systems in addressing capacity challenges. Sessions will focus on findings from early adopters like Sentara and how health systems can effectively integrate AI to enhance coordination, reduce documentation burdens, and expand the reach of clinical teams.
As healthcare systems navigate one of the most challenging operational landscapes in recent history, the integration of AI is evolving from a futuristic concept into practical tools designed to support daily care. The pressing question now is how these early models can be scaled and standardized, providing critical solutions to the ongoing patient-care crisis.
