Navigating Caregiving: A New Mother Faces Dual Responsibilities

The challenges of caregiving often collide with personal milestones, leaving many individuals in the “sandwich generation” struggling to balance their responsibilities. For Beverley Ann D’Cruz, a resident of Brampton, Ontario, this became a stark reality following a devastating phone call in March 2023. “Your mum had a stroke,” her cousin in India informed her in the early hours. This moment marked a turning point not only for her mother, Brenda D’Cruz, but also for Beverley, who was navigating life as a new mother while also becoming her mother’s caregiver.
Less than a day before the alarming call, Beverley had shared joyful moments with her mother over video chat, where Brenda sang to her newborn grandson. The unexpected news forced Beverley to confront a grim possibility: she may have to say goodbye to her mother. Within a week, she flew to Mumbai alone, unable to bring her infant son due to the immediate need for an emergency passport and visa. The 17-hour flight was filled with anxiety as she pumped breast milk in airplane restrooms, feeling guilt over leaving her child for an extended period.
Upon her arrival, Beverley found Brenda in the intensive care unit, struggling to recover from the stroke while facing the additional burden of her husband’s recent stage four lung cancer diagnosis. This dual crisis thrust Beverley into an emotional whirlwind, characterized by grief for the time lost due to her distance from home and anxiety over her parents’ declining health.
Facing the Realities of Caregiving
Beverley’s initial plans included relocating her parents to Canada once their paperwork was finalized, envisaging a return to the cherished family moments of her childhood. However, six months after her mother’s stroke, lung cancer took her father, leaving Beverley and her sister with a difficult decision. With their mother needing care, they had to choose between leaving her in India with a caregiver or bringing her to Canada.
On July 18, 2024, Brenda arrived in Brampton, marking the beginning of a new chapter. Although she initially struggled to communicate and move independently, Beverley held onto the hope that her mother would regain her former self with time and support. However, Brenda’s refusal to engage in physiotherapy and her regression in health became increasingly evident, leading to frustrations on Beverley’s part.
As Beverley juggled her full-time job, childcare, and caregiving, she began to feel overwhelmed. The strain intensified after Brenda suffered a leg fracture, doubling the care required. Instead of the joyful experiences she had envisioned, Beverley found herself attending to the needs of both her mother and her child, leading to feelings of anger and shame.
Seeking Balance and Support
In the midst of this chaos, Beverley realized she needed help. After days without self-care, she sought therapy to reassess her expectations for both herself and her mother. Gradually, she learned to accept Brenda’s limitations and stop imposing her desires for recovery. While she understood that Brenda might not be able to engage in activities like taking her grandson to the park, she found comfort in their quiet moments together, such as watching television.
Recognizing the financial and emotional strain of caregiving, Beverley made the decision to hire a personal service worker part-time. Although this came at a monetary cost, it provided her with necessary breathing room and the ability to be present for her family. The support allowed her to refocus on her priorities, acknowledging that putting her family first and asking for help were not signs of failure.
Through this journey, Beverley learned that caregiving does not mandate love or joy. Instead, she discovered the importance of giving care with compassion, despite the challenges. Her experiences resonate with many in similar situations, highlighting the emotional complexities of balancing family responsibilities while caring for aging parents.
In sharing her story, Beverley aims to foster understanding and highlight the realities faced by caregivers across the world. She emphasizes that compassion for oneself is equally important in the caregiving journey, a lesson that many continue to learn in their own lives.
