Metro Vancouver Unveils Commemorative Crosswalks for Veterans
Several municipalities in Metro Vancouver have recently unveiled permanent commemorative crosswalks dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of Canadian Armed Forces veterans. The cities of Surrey, Richmond, and Maple Ridge each installed these symbolic crossings near significant locations for Remembrance Day ceremonies, such as civic cenotaphs and Legion halls.
The most recent of these installations was unveiled in Surrey over the weekend, just ahead of Remembrance Day. Located in the 17500 block of 57 Avenue in Cloverdale, this crosswalk is positioned beside the local Royal Canadian Legion, enhancing its symbolic significance. Adorned in red and white, the crossing features the silhouette of a kneeling soldier next to a maple leaf, accompanied by the words “Lest We Forget.”
Surrey’s mayor, Brenda Locke, expressed the importance of this tribute, stating, “Every November, we pause to remember those who served and sacrificed for Canada. This crosswalk in the colours of our flag is a visible tribute to their courage and dedication. As we pass it, let us reflect on the values that built our country: service, unity, and resilience.”
Richmond followed suit in September, unveiling its own commemorative crosswalk over No. 3 Road at Anderson Road, just steps from Richmond City Hall and the city’s cenotaph. Similar to Surrey’s design, Richmond’s crossing features a red maple leaf and the solemn message, “Lest We Forget.”
Maple Ridge took a bold approach with its crossing, the largest of the three, installed in late August along 224 Street near Brown Avenue, adjacent to the local Legion. This striking red crosswalk incorporates a maple leaf, a soldier silhouette, and the words “Lest We Forget.”
These new crossings serve not only as vibrant public art installations but also as enduring reminders of the sacrifices made for Canada’s freedoms. They ensure that remembrance persists in the daily landscape, well beyond the ceremonies.
Maple Ridge’s mayor, Dan Ruimy, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This crosswalk serves as a visible and daily reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our country. We committed to having it in place ahead of Remembrance Day this year, and by working closely with the Legion, we’ve been able to deliver on that promise. By honouring our veterans in this meaningful way, we are expressing our gratitude and deep respect while strengthening the ties between our history, our community, and our future.”
Through these efforts, Surrey, Richmond, and Maple Ridge are ensuring that the contributions of veterans remain a prominent part of public consciousness, fostering a collective spirit of remembrance and appreciation.
