Magic Wand Project Celebrates 25 Years of Supporting Grads
The Magic Wand Project is celebrating its 25th anniversary, providing essential support to graduates in Greater Victoria. Founded by Elizabeth Surerus in 2001, the initiative offers students access to a variety of formal wear, including dresses, tuxedos, shoes, bags, and accessories necessary for their graduation ceremonies.
Surerus launched the project after discovering similar programs in Vancouver, realizing that Greater Victoria lacked such an initiative. “I thought we didn’t have anything in Victoria such as that, and decided it was important,” she commented. The project aims to eliminate financial barriers that might prevent students from participating in their graduation celebrations, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements.
Supporting Graduates with Style
Currently located in a home in Saanich’s Gordon Head neighbourhood, the Magic Wand Project boasts more than 100 dresses and between 40 and 50 suits and tuxedos. Surerus explained that the project is open to any student, although it specifically targets those facing financial challenges. “Why buy when you can borrow,” Surerus emphasizes, underscoring the project’s commitment to sustainability by encouraging the reuse of outfits to reduce waste. Items are provided to students for a nominal fee, making them accessible while promoting environmental consciousness.
Community involvement has been crucial to the project’s success, with ongoing support through donations and volunteer efforts. Currently, the initiative is not accepting new donations, as Surerus indicated that the existing collection is sufficient. “The community is wonderful for offering, and then they’re very appreciative when they can come and find something,” she remarked.
A Lasting Impact on Lives
Annually, the Magic Wand Project typically assists between 50 and 60 students in Greater Victoria. Since its inception, it has helped over 1,600 students attend their graduation ceremonies. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. One student expressed gratitude, stating, “Thanks to the Magic Wand, I had an unforgettable graduation.” Such testimonials highlight the significant impact of the project on the local community.
