Surrey Hospitals Foundation Unveils Innovative Health and Research Network
The Surrey Hospitals Foundation has launched the Surrey Hospitals Health and Research Network (SH Network), a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing health research and innovation across Surrey’s healthcare facilities. Announced on October 26, 2023, this network is designed to create a comprehensive platform for research funding and collaboration, marking a significant step for the region within the Fraser Health system.
Strengthening Collaboration in Healthcare
The SH Network formalizes partnerships among philanthropic organizations, academic institutions, and clinical practitioners to foster research that is deeply integrated within the hospital environment. Through this coordinated effort, the network aims to link philanthropic investments with academic and clinical expertise, thereby expanding research capacity and improving patient care.
Nicole Robson, President and CEO of the Surrey Hospitals Foundation, expressed enthusiasm about the launch. “By launching the SH Network, we are creating a system where research, education, and patient care reinforce one another,” she stated. This initiative positions Surrey as a hub for urban health innovation by leveraging the diverse communities and extensive care systems available.
The SH Network will work alongside existing research initiatives at Fraser Health and Simon Fraser University, as well as collaborations with the University of British Columbia and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. This strategic coordination is set to streamline access for future academic, industry, and charitable partners interested in investing in Surrey-based health research.
Transforming Patient Care Through Research
Dr. Kate Keetch, Director of the Department of Evaluation and Research Services at Fraser Health, emphasized the importance of integrating research into clinical practice. “Research is not separate from care. It is a catalyst for innovation and quality improvement in the system,” she noted. The SH Network aims to create an environment where research directly informs and enhances care delivery, ultimately benefiting patients and healthcare providers alike.
This initiative aligns with the broader goals of British Columbia to enhance its life sciences sector, foster local job creation, and strengthen research infrastructure. By investing in training, mentorship, and innovation, the SH Network is committed to developing the workforce in Surrey, preparing the next generation of health professionals to excel in the rapidly evolving health and life sciences landscape.
The launch of the SH Network reinforces the Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s role as the designated healthcare foundation for the City of Surrey. This initiative reflects a long-term commitment to improving local healthcare through innovation, collaboration, and research focused on community needs.
As Surrey’s population continues to grow, the demand for high-quality care is increasing. Integrating research into clinical practice has been shown to achieve better patient outcomes, enhance care quality, and improve staff engagement. The SH Network is designed to address the diverse needs of Surrey’s population, ensuring that innovation in healthcare is responsive to the various languages, cultures, and geographies present in the community.
