New Mammography Unit Boosts Breast Cancer Screening in Sault Ste. Marie
Access to advanced breast cancer screening has significantly improved in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, with the introduction of a new mammography unit at the Group Health Centre (GHC). This state-of-the-art facility utilizes advanced imaging technology to enhance early detection and expand local screening capabilities.
According to Ashlee Gerard, GHC’s manager of communications, planning, and risk, the upgraded technology offers clearer and more detailed images. “These enhanced images reduce the need for follow-up assessments, decreasing anxiety and creating a better experience for patients,” she stated in an interview.
GHC resumed its operations on January 21, 2024, after a temporary suspension of its Ontario Breast Screening Program in November due to equipment issues. Gerard confirmed that GHC collaborated closely with Sault Area Hospital to ensure continuity of care during this period. “Patients were able to choose to have their screening at Sault Area Hospital to avoid delays,” she explained.
Advanced Technology for Better Outcomes
The new mammography unit is expected to serve over 6,000 patients annually and features tomosynthesis technology, which employs low-dose X-rays to produce multi-dimensional images. This advancement supports more accurate screenings and enables the earlier identification of breast cancer, when treatment options are most effective.
“This new mammography unit marks an important milestone in diagnostic imaging for our community,” said Kim Cadham, manager of diagnostic imaging at GHC. “It ensures patients can access high-quality breast screening with advanced technology that delivers accurate and timely results, close to home.”
The acquisition of the $300,000 machine was made possible through community support, including a matching donation of $150,000 from a group of donors, alongside contributions from the Algoma District Medical Group, Merrett’s GHC Pharmacies IDA, and several local businesses.
Lil Silvano, president and CEO of GHC, emphasized the importance of this community investment. “Their support strengthens our screening capacity and helps ensure that patients across the region have access to advanced diagnostic technology that can make a meaningful difference in early detection and outcomes,” she stated.
Importance of Early Screening
The Canadian Cancer Society highlights the critical role of screening tests in identifying breast cancer before symptoms develop. Early detection significantly improves treatment success rates. Eligible individuals are encouraged to schedule a screening or consult with their primary care provider regarding breast health screening options.
“These upgrades reflect our ongoing commitment to high-quality patient care and improved health outcomes for our community,” Gerard added. For more information about the Ontario Breast Screening Program, including eligibility and how to book an appointment, visit the GHC website.
This latest development in Sault Ste. Marie underscores a community-focused approach to healthcare, ensuring that residents have access to essential diagnostic services that enhance their well-being.
