Christa Hume, a dedicated mental health clinician from Ontario, is facing a life-altering battle against advanced pancreatic cancer. The disease has metastasized to her liver and is currently considered inoperable. In response to this dire situation, three of Hume’s close friends—Kylie Gallant, Allannah Reed, and Kate Kallonen—have launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising funds for specialized therapies that target advanced and end-stage cancers.

Hume is determined to explore treatment options that offer hope beyond conventional chemotherapy and symptom management. According to Gallant, Hume has actively researched potential therapies in locations such as Germany and Texas, but the associated costs are substantial. “We believe that a GoFundMe will help lessen that financial barrier if she is accepted to those treatments,” Gallant stated.

As of this weekend, the GoFundMe campaign has successfully raised over $50,000, largely supported by friends and acquaintances from Hume’s extensive network throughout Ontario. Gallant expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community response, noting, “That really shows the amount of impact Christa has had on the communities that she’s served.”

Despite the encouraging financial support, Reed highlighted that the funds raised thus far will not cover the full cost of the treatments being considered at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas. “GoFundMe suggests $75,000 to start for a campaign like this. However, the actual treatment costs could be three or four times that amount,” she explained.

The financial strain is further complicated by looming layoffs at Algoma Steel, affecting Hume’s partner and other family members. Kallonen noted, “There’s a double down in hardship right now for them.” Although the GoFundMe campaign initially brought in over $20,000 on its first day, donations have started to decline, prompting the friends to seek renewed support. “We’re just really hoping to gain a bit more traction for her,” Reed added.

Hume’s friendship circle consists of mental health clinicians who frequently engage in activities such as camping, dinners, and trips together. “All of our kids call Christa ‘crazy auntie Christa’ because she loves them so much and spoils them,” Kallonen said. The urgency of their efforts is underscored by Hume’s desire to spend more time with her one-year-old grandson. “She needs her grandson to know her, and he’s so young that he wouldn’t remember her if she wasn’t here right now,” Kallonen emphasized.

Healthcare professionals have begun using the term ‘palliative’ to describe Hume’s cancer diagnosis, a word she struggles to accept. Gallant remarked, “She does not want to hear that word. She wants hope, and the opportunity for access to these other treatments gives her that.” The GoFundMe campaign, therefore, serves as a critical lifeline, instilling a renewed sense of hope in Hume and her loved ones.

In addition to the GoFundMe efforts, another fundraiser is being organized by The Ten Spot, where proceeds from discounted services like laser nails, facials, and brow lamination will directly benefit Hume. The community is rallying together to support one of their own during this challenging time, underscoring the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many.
