Edmonton Pioneers New Era of Cancer Care with Local Innovations
As Alberta faces a significant cancer diagnosis rate, local innovations are transforming cancer care in Edmonton. More than 24,000 Albertans will learn they have cancer this year, highlighting the urgent need for progressive treatment options. The Cross Cancer Institute (CCI), supported by community initiatives, is leading this change through the development of advanced immunotherapy treatments.
Immunotherapy, particularly using CAR-T cellular therapies, utilizes the body’s immune system to combat cancer. This groundbreaking approach marks a shift from traditional treatments, providing new hope for patients where previous methods have failed. The transition from research to real-world application relies heavily on community support and funding, which are critical for establishing the necessary infrastructure.
Significant contributions from donors, including the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, have been pivotal. The foundation’s 50/50 raffle has helped fund essential projects at the CCI, such as a specialized clinical trials unit and an expanded cancer pharmacy. These developments aim to double the number of clinical trials conducted at the institute, allowing for more patients to access life-saving therapies.
The costs associated with these innovative treatments have historically been prohibitive, often exceeding $500,000 USD per patient when outsourced to commercial providers. However, researchers at the CCI have successfully established a local “point-of-care” manufacturing model. This approach has drastically reduced the cost of CAR-T therapies to approximately $54,000 per patient, representing a remarkable 90% reduction in overall expenses.
Clinical trials have yielded impressive results, with a 52% remission rate six months post-therapy for complex cases. The local production model also ensures rapid treatment delivery, achieving a remarkable 95% success rate in generating the necessary cells within just ten days. This speed is crucial for patients with aggressive cancers, enabling timely intervention that can save lives.
Looking ahead, the CCI is poised to treat up to 120 patients annually who would otherwise lack access to these advanced therapies. This expansion not only enhances patient outcomes but also allows more families to share precious moments together.
As the holiday season approaches, individuals are encouraged to consider their giving priorities. Donations to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or participation in community initiatives like the Oilers 50/50 raffle directly support this life-changing research. Community contributions play an essential role in ensuring that Alberta remains at the forefront of pioneering cancer care.
Christy Holtby, vice-president of philanthropy at the Alberta Cancer Foundation, emphasizes the importance of collective efforts in building a healthcare system that provides every Albertan facing cancer with hope for a better future. Together, through sustained support and innovation, the vision of more time and more moments with loved ones can become a reality for many.
