Students from across the Okanagan region showcased their talents at the Skills Canada BC Central Okanagan Regional Competition, held at Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus on February 20, 2026. The event attracted hundreds of young competitors eager to demonstrate their skills in various trades and technologies, such as sumo bots, welding, cooking, automotive services, and carpentry. Successful participants will have the opportunity to advance to the provincial competition scheduled for April 15 in Abbotsford.

Among the competitors was Mielle Tetreau, a Grade 8 student from Canyon Falls Middle School. Tetreau participated in the junior carpentry category and stood out as the only female contestant in her group. “It’s kind of really honouring,” she expressed, reflecting on her experience. She discovered her passion for carpentry through a school enrichment program, where a teacher encouraged her to compete. “I feel really happy to be included in this.”

The event not only highlights the skills of young participants but also serves as a platform for fostering interest in trades among women. Caitlin Hartigan, the Dean of Trades at Okanagan College and a board member of Skills Canada BC, emphasized the importance of such competitions for confidence building, particularly for young girls. “It’s important for confidence building, especially for young girls,” Hartigan noted. She added that engaging in hands-on training empowers students to explore diverse career paths beyond traditional professions, stating, “You understand that you can do it.”

The competition aims to inspire the next generation of skilled workers, showcasing the potential of youth in the fields of trades and technology. Participants are encouraged to explore various career options while gaining practical experience through competitions like Skills Canada.
