Vancouver Island Author Launches Debut Novel in July 2025
Mark Lada, an educator from the Comox Valley, has made his mark in the literary world with the release of his debut novel, All That Wasn’t, published in July 2025. This novel delves into the complexities of human emotions, exploring themes of love, regret, and how our past experiences shape our futures.
The narrative centers on the lives of two characters, Tom and Neha, who find their paths crossing after years of separation. Lada introduces a unique perspective through an unnamed, omniscient narrator, described as a supernatural entity with a keen interest in human nature. This narrator, intriguingly referred to as the “Prince of Darkness,” observes Tom and Neha as they navigate their lives across various locations, including England, Budapest, and Mumbai, between the years 2008 and 2024.
As their stories unfold, Tom and Neha grapple with their life choices, prompting deep introspection about what they desire and the risks they are willing to take to reclaim what they have lost. The author provides a gripping insight into their struggles, emphasizing that even the smallest decisions can lead to significant consequences.
The book’s synopsis highlights the tension that builds throughout the narrative: “As memory sharpens and the present begins to tilt, they will be forced to ask themselves not just what they want, but what they’re willing to risk to find it again.” The ominous backdrop of an approaching storm in Budapest serves as a metaphor for the turmoil within the characters’ lives, suggesting that the choices they make will have lasting impacts.
Readers can find All That Wasn’t available for purchase on Amazon.ca. With its rich themes and complex characters, Lada’s debut promises to resonate with those who ponder the intricacies of love and the weight of past decisions.
