University of Victoria Encourages Student Wellness as Term Begins
The University of Victoria (UVic) has launched its new term with a strong emphasis on student wellness. In a message addressed to students, Jim Dunsdon, Associate Vice-President of Student Affairs, expressed hope that students return from their winter break rejuvenated and ready to engage in campus life. The university is encouraging students to take advantage of various services and activities that promote health and wellness as they settle back into their academic routines.
Promoting Health and Engagement
As the new term begins, students are urged to prioritize their well-being. UVic offers numerous resources and activities designed to support mental and physical health. The Centre for Athletics, Recreation, and Special Abilities (CARSA) provides memberships and recreational programs, ideal for those looking to stay active. Additionally, academic supports are readily available for students seeking assistance with their coursework.
Students are also encouraged to participate in community events. Upcoming activities include watching a Vikes game, attending concerts, or checking the UVic Events Calendar for other interesting events. The University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) and the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS) have planned several engaging events, such as the UVSS Clubs & Course Union Days and the GSS Pancake Breakfast.
From February 9 to 13, UVic will host Cultures of Care Week, focusing on wellness, consent, community, and support. This initiative aims to foster connections among students while exploring various aspects of care within relationships and campus life.
Accessible Mental Health and Harm Reduction Resources
For students seeking mental health support, the Student Wellness Centre offers both same-day and pre-booked counselling appointments. Additionally, SupportConnect provides 24/7 access to confidential mental health assistance. The university emphasizes the importance of mental health and encourages students to utilize these services.
Harm reduction resources are also available, including information on safer substance use. Students can visit the Student Wellness Harm Reduction webpage and the UVSS Safer Use webpage for further assistance. Free naloxone training sessions will be offered throughout the term, with the first scheduled for January 13, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Student Wellness Centre. This workshop will cover essential topics, including harm reduction supplies and sexual health basics.
In case of emergencies, students are reminded to call 9-1-1 first, followed by contacting Campus Security at 250-721-7599. Campus Security operates 24/7 and is equipped to connect students with necessary resources. The university has installed Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) and opioid emergency kits in various buildings across campus for added safety.
As students embark on this new term, UVic aims to foster a healthy and supportive environment. Dunsdon encourages students to explore the myriad of offerings available and to connect with their peers as they navigate their academic journeys.
Wishing all students a healthy, safe, and productive term ahead.
