Oswego School District 308 Enhances Security Measures for Safety
The Oswego School District 308 is actively enhancing security measures to ensure the safety of students and staff. During a recent school board meeting, district officials presented their annual safety and security update, highlighting the pressing need for enhanced protective resources. On average, the district encounters 46 behavioral incidents and three police service calls each day, alongside welcoming approximately 215 visitors daily.
Jeremy Bell, the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, emphasized the ongoing need for improved safety protocols. “This amount of need isn’t going away,” he stated, indicating that the district must equip its facilities with the appropriate tools to support both students and staff effectively.
Innovative Security Initiatives
To bolster security, the district has ensured that all schools are outfitted with an adequate number of security cameras. Additionally, this academic year, Oswego School District 308 has piloted an emergency messaging system known as Catapult EMS. This system facilitates instant alerts to first responders, staff, parents, and students, featuring functionalities such as panic button alerts and automated messages.
With a total of 24 schools and programs, the district serves 16,889 students, supported by 2,760 staff members and 111 administrators. To enhance visitor management, the district employs the Raptor Visitor Management System, which screens visitors against national sex offender databases and tracks visitor activity. Each school features a secure, single-point entry vestibule, ensuring visitor IDs are verified before granting access.
Staff members are also required to wear visible identification badges. This measure assists school officials in maintaining awareness of who is present within the buildings at all times.
Addressing Mental Health and Digital Safety
Recognizing the vital link between mental health and safety, the district is working to strengthen early-intervention systems, expand counseling services, and promote a culture where students and staff feel empowered to seek help and report concerns.
Digital safety remains a significant focus, with the district utilizing Securly, a web-based platform that monitors and filters student internet activity. This system blocks harmful content, detects instances of cyberbullying, and identifies potential threats.
Looking ahead, the district plans to implement additional safety and security initiatives. This includes collaborating with the Northern Illinois School Safety Administrator Association to conduct a comprehensive district safety audit and develop a district emergency response plan. Other forthcoming projects include a full-scale drill scheduled for next summer and enhancements to identification systems for both staff and students.
Bell articulated the importance of these measures, stating, “Just because you’re a high school student and you walk in and that teacher knows who you are doesn’t mean that every staff member in that building does.”
By prioritizing security and safety, Oswego School District 308 aims to create a secure environment conducive to learning and personal growth for all students and staff.
