The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) has reintroduced its popular list of **100 books to read before Kindergarten**, a resource designed to enhance early literacy for children. This initiative returns following a temporary hiatus and aims to support families in selecting engaging literature for their young ones.

Vicki Neilson, Library Services Librarian, emphasized the importance of reading together, stating, “Reading together is one of the simplest and most powerful ways families and caregivers can support a child’s development. This list helps take the guesswork out of choosing books, providing a starting point.”

In 2025, the GVPL reported that over **13,700 children and parents** participated in various literacy programs, including **Baby Time**, **Family Storytime**, and **StoryWalk** events. Neilson noted, “Our program attendance shows how eager families and caregivers are to connect through reading. This list builds on that momentum by helping extend those experiences into everyday life, including mealtimes.”

Celebrating Family Literacy Week

The relaunch of the book list coincides with **Family Literacy Week**, which runs from **January 26 to January 31, 2025**. In celebration, the GVPL will host several events, including **StoryWalk** activities at the **Central Branch** on **January 29** from **10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.** and at the **Juan de Fuca Branch** on **January 31** from **11 a.m. to 1 p.m.** Families are encouraged to participate in these events, which aim to foster a love of reading in a fun and interactive environment.

Throughout the week, additional drop-in literacy activities will be available at various branches, providing families with multiple opportunities to engage with literature. The **100 books list** can be picked up for free at any GVPL branch or accessed online, making it accessible to all interested families.

The GVPL’s commitment to early literacy reflects its understanding of the crucial role reading plays in child development. By offering resources and programs, the library continues to support families in nurturing a love for reading, which is foundational for lifelong learning.
