Free Transit for Students Kicks Off School Year in Prince Albert
Students in Prince Albert will have the opportunity to ride city buses for free on the first day of school, scheduled for September 2, 2023. This initiative aims to help students, particularly younger ones, navigate their new responsibilities as they transition into the school year.
Taking the bus alone can be a significant step for many students. While it provides a sense of independence and a chance to bond with peers, it can also be daunting to remember bus rules or worry about missing a stop. The City of Prince Albert is actively addressing these concerns by providing complimentary transit on the first school day, allowing all students to acclimate to the city’s transportation system.
Monthly bus passes are available for high school students attending Carlton, St. Mary, Wesmor, and Prince Albert Collegiate Institute. Additionally, post-secondary students enrolled at Saskatchewan Polytechnic can purchase their semester bus passes directly on campus at the technical building or at City Hall.
Charlene Tebbutt, community mobility coordinator for the City of Prince Albert, emphasized the initiative’s importance. “The free transit day helps students get to school, purchase their passes, and get familiar with their routes,” she stated. This program not only supports students but encourages families to engage with public transit.
The city is also reminding drivers to be vigilant in school zones during this busy time of year. To assist with navigation, city buses can be tracked live through the city’s transit website, enhancing safety and convenience for all users.
In promoting public transit, the City of Prince Albert underscores its commitment to fostering a supportive environment for students as they embark on another academic year.
