A group of students from École Notre-Dame-du-Sault have taken the initiative to craft blankets for vulnerable women and children. Ten students from Grades 7 and 8 at the JK-12 French-language Catholic school located on North Street designed and produced three tie blankets—one for adults and two for children. This project was guided by teachers Nadine Campbell and Marie-Pier Lecours and aimed to support clients at Centre Victoria, a non-profit organization located on Elgin Street that provides essential counselling services to Francophone women facing violence and sexual assault.

Reflecting on the experience, Grade 7 student Anna-Gayle Laroulette expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I really enjoyed it. It was a very good experience, and I think it’s good to help people in need.” The students dedicated half a week to creating the blankets and Laroulette hopes to replicate the project at home, possibly as a Christmas gift.

The origins of this initiative can be traced back to the teachers’ shared history. Nadine Campbell revealed that Marie-Pier Lecours had learned the art of blanket-making from her when she was a student in Grade 6. Upon becoming a teacher, Lecours approached Campbell, asking, “Would you like to do this with me and some of the students?” Their collaboration has now yielded an impactful project for the community.

Lecours noted the significance of the task: “It was very special to be able to do it for a good cause. Nadine taught me how, and I still make them. They’re my go-to gift now.” The blankets were crafted from fleece purchased by École Notre-Dame-du-Sault and are produced each year, particularly during the Christmas season. “It feels great, and I’ve done it for so many years with so many of my students. It’s a good feeling,” said Campbell, who has overseen similar projects in prior years.

The students dedicated their recess time to this initiative, demonstrating their commitment and enthusiasm. “They’re diligent. They made the blankets on their own free time,” Campbell remarked, adding that it was rewarding to witness their pride in the work. Lecours highlighted the educational aspect of the project, mentioning, “They know that it’s for a good cause, and we’ve had a conversation about how they’ll be able to make them as gifts in the future. It’s a nice skill to know.”

This creative endeavor not only provided comfort to those in need but also equipped students with valuable skills, fostering a sense of community and compassion. As École Notre-Dame-du-Sault continues to prioritize social responsibility, the collaboration between students and teachers exemplifies a commitment to making a meaningful impact.
