Sault Ste. Marie Metis Heritage Centre Embraces Solar Energy

The Sault Ste. Marie Metis Heritage Centre has initiated an ambitious project by installing an 8-kilowatt solar power system aimed at offsetting nearly all of the building’s electrical needs. This development is part of a broader initiative by the Metis Nation of Ontario (MNO), which promotes renewable energy solutions for Metis households and facilities throughout the province.

The new solar installation will generate excess power during peak sunlight hours, allowing the Heritage Centre to feed this surplus back into the provincial grid. This not only reduces long-term operational costs but also contributes to lower carbon emissions. Steve Gjos, president of the historic Sault Ste. Marie Metis Council, expressed optimism about the project, stating, “The sun will always be there. It saves us in the long term, not just financially, but because it’s better for the environment.”

Community Impact and Future Plans

Regional councilor Mitch Case emphasized the significance of this installation, describing it as a meaningful step forward in the centre’s development. He indicated that while this project is currently the focal point, there are possibilities for additional initiatives as other councils explore acquiring more buildings.

The MNO has announced plans to replicate similar solar energy projects across Ontario. This initiative is aligned with their long-term sustainability strategy, which focuses on enhancing energy efficiency and promoting environmental stewardship within the Metis community.
