Quebec Seniors Anticipate February OAS Payments: Key Details Inside
As February approaches, many seniors in Quebec are preparing for their monthly Old Age Security (OAS) payments. The payment for this month will mirror the amount received in January, reflecting the quarterly adjustment that took effect at the beginning of the year. According to Service Canada, the next update to the payment amounts will occur in April. The OAS program provides crucial monthly financial support to millions of Canadians aged 65 and older, supplementing income from the Canada Pension Plan.
February’s OAS payment will not feature any rate changes. The 0.3% increase from January’s quarterly review will remain in place, helping seniors manage inflation through the first quarter of 2026. Whether individuals are current OAS recipients or considering enrollment, understanding the program’s structure and eligibility is essential.
Understanding Old Age Security
Old Age Security is the primary pension program managed by the federal government for seniors. It offers monthly payments regardless of whether individuals contributed to any fund or worked during their careers. This differs from the Canada Pension Plan, which requires workplace contributions throughout a person’s working life. Most people are automatically enrolled by Service Canada, receiving a letter before their first payment that outlines the details.
In addition to basic pension payments, the program includes provisions for seniors with lower incomes through the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and related allowances. These additional payments are combined into a single monthly deposit with the OAS.
OAS Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility for Old Age Security is determined by three primary factors: age, residency in Canada, and legal status. Unlike some other programs, work history or tax payments do not impact eligibility. To qualify for the February 2026 payments, individuals must meet the following criteria:
– Be at least 65 years old
– Hold Canadian citizenship or legal resident status
– Have resided in Canada for a minimum of 10 years after turning 18
– Have a net income from 2024 of less than $148,451 (ages 65-74) or $154,196 (ages 75 and older)
Living outside Canada does not automatically disqualify individuals from receiving OAS payments. Those who maintained citizenship or legal status upon leaving and spent at least 20 years in Canada as adults can still collect payments abroad.
Additional Support Programs
The Guaranteed Income Supplement offers added financial assistance for OAS recipients with limited incomes. Eligibility for this support depends on household circumstances and earnings, though OAS payments are not included in the income calculations. The GIS income limits for February are as follows:
– Single, widowed, or divorced seniors: annual income below $22,512
– Couples both receiving full OAS: combined income below $29,712
– Couples where one partner receives the Allowance: combined income below $41,616
– Couples where one partner does not receive OAS or the Allowance: combined income below $53,952
The Allowance program is aimed at Canadians aged 60 to 64 whose spouse receives GIS, while the Allowance for the Survivor supports widowed individuals in that age range. Both programs require residency in Canada and adherence to specific income requirements.
How to Apply for OAS
Most individuals do not need to apply for OAS, as Service Canada automatically registers individuals around age 64. A confirmation letter is sent to inform recipients of their eligibility and to inquire when they would like payments to commence. OAS payments can begin the month following an individual’s 65th birthday. Delaying payments until age 70 results in a permanent increase of 0.6% for each month of delay, totaling an increase of 7.2% per year.
For those who are not automatically enrolled or need to apply manually, applications can be submitted online through My Service Canada Account or by mail or at a Service Canada office. Separate applications are necessary for the Allowance and Allowance for the Survivor.
February 2026 Payment Amounts
The amount received in February will depend on age, income, and household structure. Service Canada updates payment rates quarterly—January, April, July, and October—to align with inflation. The amounts for February will remain consistent with January’s 0.3% increase, which will be in effect through March. The maximum monthly amounts for February are as follows:
– OAS pension (ages 65-74): $742.31
– OAS pension (ages 75 and older): $816.54
– Guaranteed Income Supplement (single/partner without OAS): $1,108.74
– Guaranteed Income Supplement (partner receives OAS/Allowance): $667.41
– Allowance: $1,409.76
– Allowance for the Survivor: $1,681.69
It is important to note that these figures represent maximum amounts; actual payments may be lower based on individual circumstances. Full OAS pension eligibility requires 40 years of Canadian residence after age 18, while individuals with 10 to 39 years of residency may receive partial payments.
OAS and Tax Implications
Old Age Security payments are considered taxable income and must be reported on annual tax returns. Service Canada does not automatically withhold taxes from OAS payments unless recipients specifically request it. Those who choose not to have taxes withheld will receive their full payment each month but may face tax liabilities when filing their returns. Tax deductions can be arranged through My Service Canada Account or via a paper form. Service Canada issues tax slips annually—T4A(OAS) forms for residents and NR4 forms for those living abroad.
When to Expect February’s OAS Payment
Seniors can expect the February OAS deposit to be credited to their accounts on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. This follows the usual schedule of payments made near the end of each month. Recipients who use direct deposit will see the funds in their accounts that day without any additional steps required. Those receiving paper cheques may receive theirs slightly earlier, although the cheque will indicate the official payment date. The subsequent payment after February will occur on Friday, March 27, with amounts remaining consistent with January’s adjustments.
