iFixit Unveils iPhone Air Teardown: Battery Dominates Design

The latest teardown by iFixit of the newly launched iPhone Air reveals that the device’s design is heavily dominated by its battery, which occupies about two-thirds of the phone’s interior. This teardown, a routine analysis that iFixit conducts on new iPhone models, showcases significant changes in the device’s layout compared to earlier iterations.
In this new design, critical components, including the entire logic board, are clustered at the top of the device. This configuration reduces the risk of damage from bending, a concern that emerged with previous models during the “Bendgate” controversy. In earlier thin iPhones, the logic board was situated in the middle, making it vulnerable to pressure. The iPhone Air’s battery, which is identical to the one used in Apple’s iPhone Air MagSafe battery pack, can be swapped effortlessly between the two devices.
The focus of these teardowns extends beyond just the internal components; they assess repairability as well. Contrary to popular belief that slimmer devices would be more challenging to repair, iFixit found that the iPhone Air is surprisingly more accessible. The streamlined design means that components are less layered, allowing easier access to parts such as the USB-C connector and the battery itself.
iFixit awarded the iPhone Air a provisional repairability score of 7 out of 10. This rating is commendable for a smartphone, indicating that, despite its thinness, the device offers a level of serviceability that meets current consumer needs. While there is always room for improvement, the design choices in the iPhone Air appear to strike a balance between aesthetics and functionality.
For those interested in a deeper dive, the complete teardown is available on the iFixit website and their YouTube channel, providing a comprehensive look at the internal structure and features of the iPhone Air. The findings serve not only as a guide for tech enthusiasts but also highlight Apple’s evolving approach to device design and repairability in an increasingly competitive market.
