AI-Native Venture Fund Launches with Ambitious $50 Million Target
The launch of Brainworks Ventures, a new venture capital fund, marks a significant shift in the investment landscape as it aims to leverage the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI). With an initial fund of $50 million, Brainworks Ventures is positioning itself to support AI-native companies that promise to disrupt traditional business models.
The fund, co-founded by Dr. Phillip Alvelda, emphasizes that the venture capital model which has dominated the last two decades is no longer suitable for the evolving technology landscape. Dr. Alvelda, who has extensive experience in AI dating back to 1987, believes that AI-native companies can be developed more rapidly and efficiently, often with smaller teams and fewer resources than their predecessors.
Redefining Venture Capital
Brainworks Ventures aims to invest in pre-seed, seed, and Series A companies that utilize AI to address global challenges. The planned investment sizes will range from $250,000 to $2 million, focusing on sectors such as healthcare, life sciences, enterprise productivity, and education across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.
A key distinction for Brainworks Ventures is its commitment to being genuinely AI-native. The fund employs AI technology to enhance various operational aspects, including deal flow and portfolio management. This approach sets it apart from many funds that may claim to invest in AI but still rely on outdated processes from the 1990s.
Dr. Alvelda notes the importance of understanding the difference between being “AI-focused” and “AI-native.” He argues that while many funds invest in AI companies, they do not utilize AI in their operational frameworks. Brainworks Ventures aims to change this dynamic by harnessing AI to streamline its operations and decision-making processes.
A New Approach to Capital Requirements
The fund’s team advocates for what they describe as a “new math” in venture capital, suggesting that AI-native companies can achieve significant milestones with far less capital than traditional startups. Dr. Alvelda envisions a future where these companies can reach successful exits in as little as four years, with valuations around $6 million instead of the typical $150 million seen in conventional models.
Looking forward, Brainworks Ventures aims to validate its investment thesis over the next five to seven years. Dr. Alvelda expresses hope that their portfolio will reflect the potential of AI-native companies to achieve substantial outcomes, citing aspirations for 3 to 5 companies to reach DARPA-portfolio-scale results.
The overarching goal for Brainworks Ventures is not only to generate financial returns but also to establish its reputation as the go-to fund for ambitious AI founders. As the landscape of venture capital continues to evolve, Brainworks Ventures seeks to lead this transformation by investing in the next generation of technology companies shaped by artificial intelligence.
