AI-Native Venture Fund Launches with $50M to Transform Investment Landscape
Brainworks Ventures has officially launched a new venture capital fund with a commitment of $50 million, aiming to reshape the landscape of company building in the era of artificial intelligence. This innovative fund intends to streamline investment processes and reduce capital requirements for AI-native companies, which are increasingly being built more efficiently than traditional startups.
The traditional venture capital model, which has guided investment strategies in Silicon Valley for the last two decades, is no longer suitable for the rapid developments in the AI sector. Startups leveraging artificial intelligence can achieve significant milestones with smaller teams and shorter timelines, allowing them to operate with less funding—often requiring as little as $250,000 to $2 million in initial investments.
Focus on AI and Global Reach
Brainworks Ventures will primarily target investments in AI applications, infrastructure, tooling, healthcare, life sciences, enterprise productivity, and education. The fund will focus geographically on North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, with an emphasis on identifying and supporting exceptional AI-native founders regardless of their location.
Operating as an AI-native venture fund, Brainworks Ventures utilizes AI technology to enhance its operations, including deal flow automation and portfolio design. This structural differentiation sets the fund apart from others that may invest in AI companies but still rely on outdated processes from the 1990s.
Co-founded by Dr. Phillip Alvelda, who has been involved in AI since 1987, Brainworks Ventures draws on his extensive experience to navigate the evolving landscape of technology investment. Dr. Alvelda reflects on his career, stating, “I’ve watched every hype cycle, every ‘AI winter,’ every false dawn. That pattern recognition, knowing when technology is genuinely ready versus when it’s still laboratory research, is what 37 years in the field teaches you.”
Revolutionizing Investment Metrics
Brainworks Ventures aims to introduce what it describes as a “new math” for evaluating AI-native companies, suggesting that these firms can achieve key milestones with significantly lower capital and shorter development cycles than their traditional counterparts. The fund’s success will be measured by its ability to validate this thesis over the next 5 to 7 years.
Dr. Alvelda envisions a future where AI-native companies can achieve successful exits in as little as four years with returns of $6 million rather than the typical $150 million seen in conventional startups. He asserts, “We’ll know we’re right if 3-5 portfolio companies achieve DARPA-portfolio-scale outcomes.” While the fund does not aim for a specific return multiple, proving that substantial returns are feasible at early stages is a priority.
Beyond financial returns, Brainworks Ventures aspires to be the first choice for AI founders aiming to create ambitious projects. With its unique approach and commitment to leveraging AI in investment practices, Brainworks Ventures is setting the stage for a new era in venture capital that aligns with the rapid growth and potential of AI technologies.
