PBCN Unveils Community Safety Hub to Enhance Family Support

The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) has established a new Community Safety Hub in Pelican Narrows, aimed at enhancing safety and wellness for families in the region. Announced on August 19, 2023, this initiative is part of PBCN’s strategy to address escalating violence linked to drug and gang activities within the community.
Community leaders and members convened in Prince Albert on August 18 to finalize preparations for the Hub’s launch. This collaborative effort brings together various support services, including frontline staff from health, education, justice, and Child and Family Services, alongside community Elders, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and Victim Services.
Focus on Prevention and Support
The Community Safety Hub is designed to provide proactive assistance to families facing challenges such as addiction, housing instability, and mental health issues. According to Sarah Swan, the Hub’s coordinator, “The Hub is about prevention and support. By working together, agencies can respond quickly to families in need while protecting privacy and ensuring solutions are holistic.”
The operational framework of the Hub emphasizes a confidential and respectful approach to addressing community concerns. Issues can be raised without naming individuals, allowing for discussion without fear of stigmatization. If a situation is deemed to present an elevated risk, a case number is assigned, enabling agencies to share relevant information securely and develop a coordinated support plan.
Funding and Community Safety Plan
The project is backed by a five-year grant from Public Safety Canada and aligns with PBCN’s broader Community Safety Plan. The funding aims to ensure the Hub can effectively implement its initiatives and address the pressing needs of families within Pelican Narrows.
Through its comprehensive approach, the Community Safety Hub seeks to prevent crises before they arise, providing a vital resource for community members caught in cycles of crisis. The collaborative nature of this initiative underscores the importance of community engagement in addressing safety and wellness concerns.
By prioritizing prevention and support, PBCN is taking significant steps toward improving the quality of life for families in Pelican Narrows, fostering a safer and more supportive environment for all residents.
