The announcement of the Nobel memorial prize in economics will take place on Monday morning in Stockholm. This award marks the final presentation in this year’s Nobel Prize season, with organizers set to reveal the recipient or recipients.

Last year, the prize was awarded to economists Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson. Their research focused on understanding the economic disparities between countries, highlighting that nations with freer and more open societies tend to achieve greater prosperity.

History and Significance of the Prize

Formally known as the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, this award was established by the Swedish central bank in 1968 to honor the legacy of Alfred Nobel, a 19th-century Swedish businessman and chemist known for inventing dynamite and establishing the Nobel Prizes. Since its inception, the economics prize has been awarded 56 times to a total of 96 laureates. Notably, only three of these winners prior to Monday’s announcement have been women.

Although some Nobel purists argue that the economics prize is not technically a Nobel Prize, it is traditionally presented alongside the other Nobel awards on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death in 1896. The Nobel honors in fields such as medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace were announced last week, culminating in the anticipation surrounding the economics prize.

As the announcement approaches, the global community watches with interest to see which economist or economists will join the ranks of previous laureates who have significantly contributed to the understanding of economic sciences.
