Create and Play: HH Bricks Unveils DIY LEGO Connect 4 Set
In a unique twist on traditional LEGO sets, designer HH Bricks has introduced a playable version of the classic tabletop game, Connect 4. This innovative set not only allows enthusiasts to build but also to engage in the strategic gameplay that has captivated generations since its invention in 1974. The set has quickly gained traction, receiving over 2,800 votes on the LEGO Ideas platform, where it aspires to reach the coveted mark of 10,000 votes for potential commercial release.
Building a Game Experience
Unlike many LEGO sets designed primarily for display, the Connect 4 creation from HH Bricks emphasizes interactive play. Players take turns dropping colored tokens into a vertical slot-board, aiming to connect four of their tokens in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The game’s simplicity and strategic depth make it appealing for players of all ages.
The design itself is no small feat. While HH Bricks has not disclosed the exact number of pieces, the set comprises numerous single and double-stud bricks to create the board and its accompanying tokens. Building flat surfaces in LEGO requires a considerable amount of bricks, contributing to the set’s complexity.
From Concept to Reality
The rules of the game are straightforward. Each player selects a color and begins dropping tokens into any available slot. Victory is achieved by forming a line of four tokens before the opponent does. Players can also opt for a more challenging variant known as the double-streak round, which requires two connections to win. Once the game concludes, a simple pull of the bottom tray releases all tokens, allowing for a quick reset.
For those unfamiliar with LEGO Ideas, it is an online community where LEGO fans can propose and support new designs. Projects that garner enough support can be reviewed by LEGO’s internal team for possible production. The Connect 4 set currently has 478 days remaining to reach its voting goal, creating an opportunity for fans to contribute to its potential success.
As Connect 4 marks its 50th anniversary this year, HH Bricks’ rendition celebrates not only the game’s legacy but also the creativity inherent in the LEGO community. The initiative showcases how LEGO bricks can transcend mere building to create interactive experiences that foster social engagement and fun.
For enthusiasts interested in supporting this project, voting is available on the LEGO Ideas website, where they can help bring this inventive set to life. The intersection of building and play highlights the enduring appeal of both LEGO and classic games like Connect 4.
