Drew Fischer Wins MLS Referee of the Year for Second Straight Year
Canadian referee Drew Fischer has been recognized as the MLS Referee of the Year for the second consecutive time. The accolade marks a significant achievement for the 45-year-old from Calgary, making him the first referee to earn back-to-back honors since Alan Kelly in 2015-16. Kelly, who has since retired, also received this distinction in 2018.
In addition to Fischer’s achievement, Cory Richardson was named MLS Assistant Referee of the Year for the second year in a row. Fischer’s career in Major League Soccer has been notable, as he has officiated a total of 220 MLS matches since making his debut in August 2012. This season alone, he officiated 20 regular-season games.
International Experience and Recognition
Fischer’s international experience includes officiating two matches during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and serving in various roles at prestigious tournaments such as the 2024 Olympic Games and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in both 2019 and 2023. He was also involved in the FIFA Club World Cups in 2020, 2021, and 2025, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The selection process for the MLS Referee and Assistant Referee of the Year includes nominations from executives at the Professional Referee Organization. The final choices are determined through a vote by technical staff from MLS clubs, media representatives, and players within the league.
Fischer’s recognition underscores his commitment and expertise within the realm of professional officiating. He joins the ranks of other distinguished referees from Canada, including Silviu Petrescu, who was honored as the top referee in 2012, and Joe Fletcher, recognized as the top assistant referee in 2018.
