St. Laurent Choir Serenades Fairview Mall with Inclusivity
Members of the choir from the Action Centre in St. Laurent took to the stage at Fairview Shopping Centre in Pointe-Claire, delivering a powerful message of inclusivity through their heartfelt performances. The choir, made up of adults with physical disabilities, filled the centre court with uplifting songs, showcasing not only their musical talent but also the spirit of acceptance and community.
The Action Centre serves as a vital organization for individuals with disabilities, offering a variety of programs designed to foster social, recreational, and educational engagement. Mojgan Yazdani, the Executive Director, emphasized the uniqueness of the centre, stating, “It is the only bilingual centre of its kind. We provide adapted programming to young adults with physical disabilities and respite for their families.”
For many members, participation in the choir is more than just singing; it is about building connections and finding joy in shared experiences. Natasha Zielinski, a choir member, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I love singing with all my friends, all the members. I love being in the group!” Her sentiment reflects the essence of the Action Centre, where camaraderie flourishes.
The choir’s performances are characterized by a combination of serious commitment to music and a lighthearted approach to entertainment. Gordon Mitchell, another member, noted the welcoming environment at the Action Centre, stating, “Nobody judges anybody. We all have different disabilities, but we are all accepted the same.” His humor adds a lively touch to the performances, as he quipped, “I sing solo — so low that nobody hears me!”
Through their music, the choir members not only entertain but also highlight the importance of community and mutual support. Dimitri Fiskas, who is blind, shared how the Action Centre has positively impacted his life. “It helps me grow up, become more independent, and it makes me talk to other people in other programs that I attend,” he said. His experience underscores the transformative power of inclusivity and engagement.
As the choir continues to perform at various venues, they are not just spreading joy through their music; they are also advocating for a more inclusive society. The performances at Fairview Shopping Centre serve as a reminder that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves a space to express themselves and connect with others.
The Action Centre stands as a beacon of hope and positivity for many individuals, demonstrating that with support and community, barriers can be broken, and everyone can contribute their unique voice to the chorus of life.
