Surrey’s CIBC Run for the Cure Set to Raise Funds for Breast Cancer

The CIBC Run for the Cure, Canada’s largest volunteer-led event supporting breast cancer treatment and research, is scheduled for October 5, 2023, at Crescent Park in South Surrey. The event, which runs from 08:30 to 12:00, aims to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society and is one of eight similar events taking place across British Columbia this year.
Surrey’s inaugural run occurred in 2013 at Bear Creek Park, attracting around 1,150 participants who collectively raised $177,926. This year, participants will gather at the playground area of Crescent Park, located at 12930 28 Ave., and can choose to either walk or run distances of five or one kilometre.
As of September 29, the fundraising leaderboard for Surrey is led by Steve Fedow, who has raised an impressive $11,280 for his team, Sensational Sisters. Following him are Dawn Durant from Dani’s Team Tumornators at $6,833, Leslie Hill with team Together in Pink at $6,036.50, and Sydney Arce of team Metastatic Breast Cancer, who has raised $4,865.60.
Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Canada, with approximately one in eight women affected. Since the inaugural event in 1992, over $507 million has been raised to support breast cancer research initiatives. This year, other cities in British Columbia, including Abbotsford, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Prince George, Vancouver, and Victoria, will also host their own run events on the same day.
The CIBC Run for the Cure is designed to be inclusive, welcoming individuals of all ages and abilities. For those unable to attend in person, the event offers a “Run. Anywhere. Anyway” option, allowing participants to join from their own locations.
To register, donate, or obtain further information about the event, interested individuals can visit the Canadian Cancer Society’s website at support.cancer.ca.
