Ottawa’s CHEO Reports Surge in Flu Cases, Urges Vaccination

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa is witnessing a significant increase in flu cases, prompting urgent calls for vaccination across the community. Since the onset of the cold and flu season, CHEO has reported a “concerning rise” in the number of children seeking emergency care for influenza-related illnesses.

In November 2023, CHEO documented an alarming eightfold increase in the number of children testing positive for influenza compared to November 2022. Hospitalizations also doubled during this period, highlighting the severity of the current flu season. CHEO officials state that the peak of flu cases is not anticipated until late December, suggesting that the volume of infections may continue to rise in the coming weeks.

Urgent Call for Vaccination

CHEO emphasizes the importance of vaccination to mitigate the impact of influenza. Data indicates that most children receiving treatment at the Emergency Department have not been vaccinated against the flu. In response, CHEO is urging children, youth, and adults to get their flu vaccine to protect not only themselves but also vulnerable community members, including infants too young to be vaccinated.

According to CHEO, “The flu is more than a bad cold. Children under five face a higher risk of severe illness from influenza due to their smaller airways and developing immune systems.” The hospital cautions that even healthy children can experience serious complications, particularly as the flu virus spreads rapidly in schools and childcare settings.

The flu vaccine is accessible to everyone aged six months and older. Residents can obtain the flu shot at participating pharmacies or from primary care providers, including doctors and nurse practitioners. Additionally, Ottawa Public Health is offering both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines to eligible high-risk populations facing barriers to healthcare access.

As the holiday season approaches, CHEO reminds the community that there is still time to receive the vaccine. Vaccination not only helps reduce the risk of hospitalization but also supports the health of families and the healthcare system as a whole.
