Join The Tyee’s Fight Against Disinformation and Win Prizes
The Tyee has launched an initiative aimed at combating disinformation in Canada, inviting teens to participate in an art contest with the chance to win a scholarship to East Carolina University’s summer programs. This effort is part of The Tyee’s broader mission for 2026, which includes the unveiling of the Reality Check Project. The aim is to foster a world grounded in rational, fact-based information.
In an environment where misinformation proliferates, The Tyee emphasizes the importance of credible journalism. With the rise of digital platforms that often prioritize sensationalism over facts, the need for reliable news sources has never been more critical. As misinformation campaigns grow, fueled by advanced technology and shifting media landscapes, The Tyee remains committed to reversing this trend.
Strengthening Journalism for a Fact-Based Future
The Tyee’s commitment to integrity in journalism is reflected in its ambitious goal to recruit 750 new supporters by December 31, 2026. The majority of funding for The Tyee comes from its supporters, known as Builders, enabling the organization to maintain independence and continue producing high-quality reporting.
This year marks a significant milestone, as The Tyee is now a registered journalism organization, allowing it to provide tax receipts for contributions. This change aims to encourage more individuals to support the cause financially. The organization plans to publish over 1,000 original pieces in 2026, consistently linking to sources and adhering to a transparent artificial intelligence policy.
Leading the charge are dedicated journalists such as Jen St. Denis, who has meticulously reported on extremist views during recent elections, and Andrew Nikiforuk, who has exposed the Alberta government’s dealings with foreign coal mining interests. Other notable contributors include Amanda Follett Hosgood, who covered critical human rights issues, and Michael Harris, whose extensive experience informs his reporting on Canada’s political landscape.
The Reality Check Project: A Collaborative Approach
The Reality Check Project seeks to enhance the fight against disinformation through collaboration. By working alongside expert partners and utilizing The Tyee’s own investigative resources, the project aims to detoxify the digital sphere and improve public discourse. Initial collaborations have already been established with organizations such as the Media Ecosystem Observatory and DeSmog, both of which focus on safeguarding democracy from online threats.
With ongoing efforts to expand its reach and impact, The Tyee is also introducing a new incentive for supporters. New Builders who contribute a monthly amount of at least $15 or an annual contribution of $180 will receive a limited edition Tyee baseball cap designed by local artist Makayla Crenshaw. This initiative aims to foster a sense of community among supporters while encouraging financial contributions.
As The Tyee prepares for a busy year ahead, it remains steadfast in its mission to deliver fact-based journalism. The organization invites individuals who share its commitment to informed citizenship to consider supporting its work. By joining as a Builder, supporters help ensure that The Tyee can continue its essential role in the media landscape, combating misinformation and promoting accountability.
For those interested in contributing, The Tyee encourages potential supporters to visit its website to sign up and join the fight against disinformation.
