Huntley, a village in Illinois, has decided not to participate as a stop on the upcoming Chicago-to-Rockford passenger rail line. The village’s leadership has expressed concerns about how a station would impact its downtown area, particularly regarding traffic and parking issues.

Village Manager Dave Johnson announced on Friday that Huntley has formally notified the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) of its decision. Originally, Huntley was designated to be one of three stops along the route, alongside Elgin and Belvidere. Johnson explained that uncertainty over potential ridership numbers and the financial commitments required from the village also influenced the decision.

According to the Chicago to Rockford Rail website, ridership projections for Huntley were estimated to be between 200 and 300 passengers by 2045. Two weeks ago, the village communicated its withdrawal to IDOT, and as a result, a public information meeting scheduled for this week was canceled.

While Huntley’s name still appears on online resources discussing the planned rail line, which is anticipated to begin operations in 2027, the village’s decision signifies a shift in the project’s dynamics. Residents had previously engaged in discussions regarding potential locations for the new train station.

Meanwhile, city officials in Marengo have expressed interest in having a stop on the new passenger line, indicating that interest in the rail project remains strong in the region despite Huntley’s withdrawal. The evolving situation underscores the complexities involved in developing transportation infrastructure that meets the needs of local communities while balancing growth and logistical concerns.
