As families gather for Thanksgiving celebrations on October 13, 2023, Halifax is implementing various service changes and closures. While Thanksgiving is not a statutory holiday in Atlantic Canada, many municipal services will be affected, and residents should plan accordingly.

Service Disruptions and Closures

Most grocery stores in Halifax will be closed on Monday, with the exception of the Dartmouth Meat Market, which may operate under holiday hours. Drug stores will largely remain open, but all Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) outlets will close their doors for the day.

Shopping centres will also be impacted, as the Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, and Sunnyside Mall will not open on October 13. Additionally, most municipally operated recreation facilities will close, although the Sackville Sports Stadium will remain operational.

Transportation and Waste Collection

The city’s 311 contact centre will be closed on Monday, only accepting urgent calls. Regular services will resume on Tuesday, October 14.

There will be no curbside collection for green bins, recycling, garbage, or bulky items on October 13. Both the Otter Lake waste management facility and the municipal recycling facility will also be closed for the holiday.

Public transportation will run on a holiday schedule, with the first trip of the Alderney ferry departing from the Alderney terminal at 07:30. The last trip from the Halifax terminal will leave at 23:45. Notably, the Woodside ferry will not operate on this date.

Residents are encouraged to check local listings for specific store hours and transportation schedules to ensure a smooth Thanksgiving holiday.
