East Meets West Dinner in Kelowna Raises Record $161,000 for Children

The 18th annual East Meets West Children’s Foundation Diwali dinner and dance fundraiser took place on September 27, 2023, at the Parkinson Recreation Centre in Kelowna. This year’s event achieved a remarkable milestone, raising over $161,000, making it the most successful fundraiser in the event’s history. The evening was fully booked, showcasing strong community support and engagement.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from the foundation’s board members, followed by an energetic performance from local Punjabi folk dancers. This vibrant display set the stage for a spirited donation effort led by board member Indy Brar. During a focused 15-minute donation blitz, the attendees rallied together, contributing generously to the cause.
The first notable pledge came from a table of Kelowna firefighters, who committed $1,000 to support the foundation’s initiatives. In just a quarter of an hour, the enthusiastic crowd surpassed the initial fundraising goal of $75,000 and exceeded last year’s total of approximately $140,000.
Impact on Children and Communities
Funds raised during the evening will support numerous programs aimed at helping children both locally and in developing countries. A representative from the East Meets West Junior Team provided an update on their fundraising efforts to purchase 100 goats for children in Uganda. The goats will provide essential resources for families and help improve their quality of life.
As the update concluded, guests were inspired to pledge additional donations, facilitating the final push needed to acquire the animals. The evening not only highlighted the community’s generosity but also the tangible impact these contributions will have on the lives of children in need.
Doors opened at 5:30 p.m. for guests to enjoy drinks and mingle before the fundraising activities began. Following the intense donation efforts, attendees relished an Indian buffet, which set the tone for a lively night of dancing and celebration.
The overwhelming success of this year’s event underscores the ongoing commitment of the East Meets West Children’s Foundation to empower children and families. As the foundation looks ahead, it aims to build on this momentum and continue its vital work in supporting vulnerable communities.
