David Kämpf, the newly signed player for the Vancouver Canucks, is navigating a whirlwind of events, both on and off the ice. The 30-year-old centre recently joined the Canucks on a one-year contract worth $1.1 million after a challenging stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In addition to his professional transitions, Kämpf and his wife, Eliška, are expecting their second child in March 2026.

Kämpf’s journey to the Canucks has been tumultuous. After failing to secure a spot on the Maple Leafs’ 23-man roster during training camp, he was relegated to the minors. Following a brief four-game appearance, he faced suspension for declining to travel with the Leafs’ AHL affiliate, which ultimately led to the termination of his contract.

The change of scenery has revitalized Kämpf, who made his debut with the Canucks in a game against the Florida Panthers, the furthest away city from Vancouver in the NHL. Following this initial outing, he returned to the West Coast to participate in his first home game.

In a heartwarming announcement, Kämpf and Eliška shared the news of their growing family on social media. They posted a photo featuring their son, Michael, wearing a knitted sweater that read “velký brácha,” meaning “big brother” in Czech. Their first child, Michael, was born in 2022.

Embracing New Beginnings with the Canucks

Kämpf expressed enthusiasm about joining a team with fellow Czech players, noting the camaraderie he had missed while in Toronto. “I know [Filip Hronek] a little bit from the past, so it’s nice to have some Czech guys on the team,” he remarked. Alongside Hronek, the Canucks roster includes two other compatriots: Filip Chytil and recently recalled goaltender Jiri Patera.

Reflecting on his recent experiences, Kämpf acknowledged the challenges he faced. “Last couple of weeks was a little bit harder, but I’m happy I’m here and I can play again,” he said. He highlighted the positive team dynamics during his time on the road, stating, “It’s been a busy last couple of days. I joined the team on the road, so it was good to spend some time with the boys, and I’m ready to play.”

At Canucks practice, Kämpf skated alongside wingers Conor Garland and Brock Boeser, preparing for future games. Throughout his four seasons with the Maple Leafs, he averaged eight goals and 23 points per 82 games, showcasing his potential contribution to the Canucks’ lineup.

As Kämpf settles into his new role and anticipates the arrival of his second child, he appears poised for both personal and professional growth in Vancouver. The combination of family milestones and new team dynamics is sure to make this a meaningful chapter in his career.
