Canadiens Eye Elias Pettersson: What It Would Cost to Acquire Him
The potential trade of Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks to the Montreal Canadiens is gaining traction following the recent trade of Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. With discussions of a Canucks rebuild intensifying, Pettersson’s future in Vancouver is now under scrutiny. Speculation surrounds the cost it would take for the Canadiens to secure the talented center, who has shown impressive performance in previous seasons.
David Ettedgui, a sports analyst, estimates that the asking price for Pettersson could include up-and-coming players such as Michael Hage, Oliver Kapanen, and Adam Engström, along with a second-round draft pick. This analysis suggests that any transaction involving Pettersson would be significant, especially in light of the assets the Canucks received for Hughes.
However, financial considerations complicate matters. Pettersson commands a hefty salary of $11.6 million per year, which necessitates adjustments on the Canadiens’ payroll for the trade to work. This could involve the Canucks retaining part of Pettersson’s salary or the Canadiens sending some of their own higher-salaried players in return. Given that Pettersson’s contract extends until the end of the 2031-2032 season, the Canucks may be reluctant to cover any portion of his salary.
Despite a slight dip in performance over the past two years, Pettersson remains a formidable first-line center, having recorded 102 points in the 2022-2023 season and 89 points in the following year. Analysts suggest that while his recent play may raise questions, his overall potential could justify a high asking price from the Canucks.
Ettedgui expresses skepticism regarding the wisdom of such a trade, indicating that the Canadiens would be wise to consider other options rather than depleting their roster of prospects for a player who is still seeking consistency in his game.
As the NHL landscape continues to evolve with trade rumors and player movements, Canadiens fans are left wondering how the franchise will navigate the complexities of a potential deal for Pettersson. The stakes are high, and the decision will likely have far-reaching implications for both teams involved.
In other news, the NHL continues to generate buzz with recent developments, including the ongoing discussions around players such as Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette. As the season progresses, fans are eager to see how these narratives unfold.
Overall, the possibility of Elias Pettersson joining the Montreal Canadiens adds yet another layer of intrigue to an already dynamic NHL season.
