Google Unveils Gemini for Home, Replacing Google Assistant

Google has announced the launch of Gemini for Home, a new voice assistant set to replace the long-standing Google Assistant. The reveal occurred during the Made by Google 2025 event, marking a significant shift in how users will interact with their smart home devices. This upgrade promises a more advanced and conversational AI experience, moving away from the traditional command-and-control model.
Transforming Smart Home Interactions
Gemini for Home integrates the advanced reasoning and search capabilities of existing Gemini models used on mobile devices, enhancing its usability. Users will continue to activate the assistant with “Hey Google,” but subsequent interactions will offer a more fluid conversational experience. This transition aims to make smart home management simpler and more intuitive.
The new assistant allows for nuanced requests, enabling users to interact in a more natural manner. For instance, a user can ask Gemini to “play that song from this year’s summer blockbuster about race cars,” and it will locate the desired track across various streaming platforms. In addition, users can streamline their smart home commands, such as issuing multiple requests like “Dim the lights, and set the temp to 72 degrees” or providing complex instructions like “turn off the lights everywhere except my bedroom.”
Enhanced Family Coordination with Gemini Live
Gemini for Home introduces a feature called Gemini Live, which enhances conversational capabilities significantly. Users can initiate a session by saying, “Hey Google, let’s chat,” allowing for an uninterrupted dialogue without needing to repeat the wake word. This functionality opens up new avenues for real-time assistance, such as troubleshooting household issues or collaborating creatively, like brainstorming a bedtime story.
Furthermore, the ability to interrupt responses to adjust the conversation is designed to mimic natural human interactions. This feature aims to make the AI feel more like a personal assistant rather than a simple command-driven tool.
As Google prepares for this transition, the company has announced that Gemini for Home will gradually replace the existing Google Assistant on all compatible devices. Both free and paid versions of the new assistant will be available, with early access expected to begin in October 2023. Additional details regarding the rollout will be shared in the coming weeks.
This launch signifies the end of an era for the Google Assistant, which has served users for nearly a decade. With Gemini for Home, Google aims to fulfil the promise of a truly helpful and conversational AI, enhancing user experience across all aspects of home life.
