The latest expansion for Elden Ring, titled The Forsaken Hollows, has been released, introducing a new map, classes, and challenges. While the expansion offers exciting new content, it also presents familiar frustrations that may not appeal to all players. This expansion appears to cater primarily to dedicated fans rather than attracting new players.

New Classes and Challenges Await

One of the most anticipated features of The Forsaken Hollows is the introduction of two new classes: the Scholar and the Undertaker. The Scholar serves as a support class, enhancing party capabilities and weakening enemies through its ultimate ability, Communion. In contrast, the Undertaker is a melee-focused fighter with a powerful high-speed attack known as Loathesome Hex, complemented by the passive ability Confluence, which provides additional attacks in certain situations.

Players are likely to find the Undertaker to be more viable in both solo and group play, although it remains unclear if either class will surpass long-established favorites among the player base.

In addition to the new classes, the expansion features two significant Nightlord bosses, Weapon Bequeathed Harmonia and the Dreglord (also known as Traitorous Straghess). Players will also encounter four new bosses at launch, including a revamped Knight Artorias and a challenging version of Mohg. Despite the quality of these additions, many players may question the lengthy six-month wait for new content.

Exploring the Forgotten Hollows

The expansion introduces a vast new territory called the Forgotten Hollows, which contrasts sharply with the previous area, Limveld. This new region features a cool-toned color palette and an intricate vertical layout that provides a fresh experience for returning players. However, the size of the area can also be a double-edged sword, making it challenging to locate bosses, particularly for solo players. The risk of falling off the map adds another layer of difficulty to the exploration process.

While the Forgotten Hollows is visually appealing, players may experience initial confusion in navigating its expansive layout. Solo players may find it especially difficult to defeat some of the more dispersed bosses in the time required.

Niche Appeal and Frustrations

The release of Elden Ring Nightreign has raised eyebrows, as it appears to deliberately target a niche audience rather than the broader player base that emerged after the success of the original game. The expansion requires players to have already defeated the first Nightreign boss, which may deter newcomers from exploring the new content.

This decision might not seem unreasonable for existing players but could alienate potential new fans curious about the expansion. The overall experience for solo players remains challenging, and relying on random teammates often leads to frustration.

Despite offering new classes, bosses, and a fresh map, some players may feel that the expansion falls short in terms of new weapons and spells, particularly when compared to the previous successful DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree.

For the dedicated fan base, The Forsaken Hollows serves as a reward for their continued support, albeit at a price of $15. While the new content revitalizes some aspects of Elden Ring, many players may wonder if these additions could have been gradually rolled out for free over the past six months.

As players delve into the challenges presented by the Forgotten Hollows, they will find quality experiences, but the limited scope of the expansion raises questions about its long-term appeal. The expansion may bring back some lapsed players, but it remains to be seen how well it will resonate with those who initially struggled with the game’s unique design.
