EcoATM, a prominent name in electronics recycling, has officially entered the Canadian market through a partnership with Walmart. Thirteen self-serve kiosks have been launched in select Walmart locations across the Greater Toronto Area, specifically in cities such as Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, and Burlington. This initiative marks the beginning of EcoATM’s expansion plans in Canada, with additional kiosks expected to follow.

The need for effective e-waste recycling in Canada is pressing. A report from the CBC indicates that Canadians generated nearly one million tonnes of e-waste in 2020. This figure has risen significantly from 8.3 kilograms per person in 2000 to 25.3 kilograms per person today. Projections suggest that total e-waste could reach 1.2 million tonnes annually by 2030. Despite this growing challenge, a survey conducted by Statcan reveals that only 16 percent of Canadian households returned unwanted phones to suppliers. Additionally, 14 percent of households reported having unwanted computers, cellphones, or televisions that needed disposal.

EcoATM operates approximately 6,500 kiosks throughout the United States, having successfully collected over 50 million devices and diverting around 25 million pounds of e-waste from landfills. This year, the company aims to recycle 7.5 million pounds of e-waste across North America.

How the Kiosks Work

The self-service kiosks employ what EcoATM describes as “advanced diagnostics and real-world pricing” to assess devices and offer immediate cash payments. Users begin the process by placing their device inside the kiosk, which then conducts an automated evaluation and identity verification. Following this, the kiosk presents a cash quote for the device. Users have the option to accept the quote and receive their payment instantly.

This innovative approach aims to simplify the recycling process for consumers, encouraging more individuals to responsibly dispose of their electronic waste. With the launch of these kiosks, EcoATM not only enhances e-waste recycling accessibility but also contributes to environmental sustainability efforts in Canada.
