Toronto has secured a notable position on the global stage, ranking 17th in the latest “World’s Best Cities” list published by Resonance Consultancy. This annual report, released this week, highlights Toronto’s appeal as a desirable place to live, placing it ahead of major cities such as San Francisco and Milan.

The rankings for 2026 reflect Toronto’s status as a vibrant metropolitan area with a strong reputation for livability and opportunity. Toronto dropped two spots from its previous ranking of 15th, but it remains the highest-ranked Canadian city. Other Canadian cities included in the list are Vancouver at No. 41, Montreal at No. 45, Ottawa at No. 73, and Calgary at No. 85.

According to Resonance Consultancy, the rankings are determined by three critical factors: livability, lovability, and prosperity. The livability score encompasses various metrics, including walkability, air quality, and public transit accessibility. Toronto’s diverse and educated population contributes significantly to its ranking, with the city boasting the fourth most educated residents globally.

The report highlights Toronto as “Canada’s sensible gateway for immigration and innovation,” suggesting that its dynamic environment continues to attract newcomers. The city is noted for its blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy, supported by a robust start-up ecosystem.

Additionally, Toronto’s infrastructure developments, such as the ongoing construction efforts symbolized by over 150 tower cranes, the renovation of Massey Hall, and the creation of Love Park’s heart-shaped pond, have positively influenced its ranking.

Global Competitors and Methodology

The top position in the “World’s Best Cities” list was claimed by London, U.K., marking its 10th consecutive year at the summit. Following London, other cities in the top ten include New York City, Paris, and Tokyo. The complete list ranks 100 cities globally, each with a metropolitan population exceeding one million, evaluated for their economic growth and ability to attract visitors and investors.

Resonance’s methodology combines comprehensive data from over 400 cities and insights gathered from user-generated ratings on platforms such as Instagram, Google, and TikTok. The research group stated that the rankings exclude all Russian cities in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, reinforcing their focus on cities that exemplify peace and prosperity.
