Research Manitoba Launches $100K Grant for AI Innovations
Research Manitoba has introduced a new funding initiative aimed at addressing significant challenges within the province through community-driven research. The Manitoba Solutions Grant (MSG) will allocate up to $100,000 annually for a maximum of two years to projects that foster collaboration between researchers and community or industry partners, focusing initially on artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies.
Jennifer Cleary, CEO of Research Manitoba, emphasized the importance of practical outcomes from research. “Manitobans expect research to deliver real results in their communities, workplaces and health systems,” she stated. The MSG aims to translate innovative ideas into actionable solutions that can enhance the quality of life for residents in the province.
Support for Diverse Sectors
The grant will support initiatives that promote the responsible development and application of advanced technologies across various sectors, including healthcare, energy, and agriculture. Ashley King, a program officer with Research Manitoba, noted the surge in interest regarding AI applications in real-world scenarios. “From advancing healthcare decision-making and wastewater treatment to optimizing food production, this intake will help us better understand both the potential and the limits of this rapidly evolving field,” she mentioned.
To ensure the research is applicable, each project must include at least one co-applicant who is a knowledge user. This could involve healthcare providers, industry partners, or non-profit organizations. For example, a university research team might collaborate with a local mental health organization to develop an AI tool capable of identifying early signs of depression in youth.
Freyja Arnason, Director of Strategy and Programs at Research Manitoba, highlighted the initiative’s goal of fostering collaboration from the outset. This approach aims to ensure that projects are co-designed with tangible benefits for the community.
Investment in Innovation and Growth
The launch of the Manitoba Solutions Grant is part of a broader strategy to enhance innovation, talent development, and economic growth within the province. This initiative is supported by a recent $5 million increase in Research Manitoba’s operating budget for 2025, aimed at reinforcing the province’s commitment to forward-thinking research.
Applications for the inaugural intake of the grant are due by November 24, 2025. Interested parties can find full program details and eligibility criteria on the Research Manitoba website at researchmanitoba.ca/MSG. The initiative represents a significant step towards harnessing the potential of emerging technologies to address pressing local issues while promoting collaborative research practices.
