A teenager from Windsor, Ontario, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a Guinness World Record for stacking bottle caps using chopsticks. Daniel Joseph Ireneo, 14 years old, accomplished this incredible task by stacking 12 plastic bottle caps in just 30 seconds on August 13, 2023, a few days before his birthday. This record falls under the category for those under 16 years of age.

The young record-holder shared his journey, revealing that he initially struggled with using chopsticks. “I didn’t even know how to use chopsticks. A few days turned to a few weeks… from the beginning it was very, very difficult for me,” Ireneo told CBC News. His determination and relentless practice eventually led him to achieve this goal, which was inspired by a Guinness World Record book he received as a gift from his mother when he was eight.

Ireneo’s record surpasses the previous one of 23 caps stacked in 30 seconds, held by Silvio Sabba from Italy since 2018. After many hours of practice, Ireneo progressed from stacking three caps to five, and ultimately to twelve. “I never knew that I would be a Guinness World Record holder,” he expressed. “Keep on going, have determination because you never know where it might take you.”

Support from Family Fuels His Journey

The support of Ireneo’s parents played a crucial role in his success. His father, Francis Ireneo, and mother, Vivian Ireneo, encouraged him during challenging moments when he considered giving up. Vivian recalled a late night in August when she was asked to film her son’s attempts. “I said, ‘DJ, it’s okay, just give up’. But he said, ‘Mom, no, I will never give up. I will do my best’,” she recounted. When he finally achieved his goal, she was overwhelmed with pride.

Ireneo, who is a Grade 9 student at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, expressed his gratitude towards his family, acknowledging their unwavering support. His mother often reminded him of the importance of humility, stating, “Practice will make it perfect.” The family, including Ireneo’s aunt Madeline Butac, celebrated his achievement, highlighting the importance of discipline and perseverance for young people.

A Lesson in Perseverance

The Ireneo family feels immense pride in Daniel’s hard work paying off and hopes this achievement will lead to even greater things in his future. “Most people and their success stories just show you the good parts, but you never know the struggles they took, the dedication. So never give up. Struggle is important,” he reflected.

As Ireneo prepares to share his news with classmates, he hopes his story serves as an inspiration for others. His future aspirations include becoming a doctor, and he is determined to reach his full potential. The journey to achieving this world record has provided him with valuable lessons in determination and resilience, leaving a lasting impact on his life and those around him.
