In response to a tragic antisemitic terror attack during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, the Winnipeg Police Service has increased patrols around cultural centres, places of worship, schools, and synagogues. The incident, which occurred on December 10, 2023, resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals, prompting local authorities to ensure the safety of the community during the Jewish holiday.

In a statement posted on social media, the Winnipeg Police expressed their solidarity with the Jewish community, stating, “As we send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Jewish community and citizens abroad in Australia, we recognize the impact such horrific acts have on our local community.” Enhanced police presence is aimed at providing reassurance and security to those attending various Hanukkah events.

Increased Security Measures in Winnipeg

On the first night of Hanukkah, security was notably heightened at Chabad-Lubavitch of Winnipeg, located in River Heights. Officers and private security personnel were present to monitor the gathering, reflecting a broader trend of increased security measures at Hanukkah celebrations worldwide following the attack at Bondi Beach.

Manitoba’s political leaders and Jewish organizations have condemned the violence. Premier Wab Kinew took to social media platform X to express his outrage, stating, “Antisemitism has no place in society. The attacks at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration are horrifying. We stand with the Jewish community, mourn the lives lost, and stand firmly against hate and violence in all its forms.”

Mayor Scott Gillingham echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing his support for Winnipeg’s Jewish community. He wrote, “To Winnipeg’s Jewish community: as you light the first candle of Hanukkah tonight, know your city stands with you. We grieve the lives lost and remain united against darkness in all its forms.”

Community Response and Vigilance

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg stated that community security initiatives are on “full alert” during the Hanukkah celebrations. They announced that there would be an increased police presence at the Asper Jewish Community Campus and other Jewish institutions across the city to ensure safety. The federation urged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

“Our community will never retreat in the face of hatred, nor will we refrain from carrying on our Jewish traditions,” the federation declared. “We will use every tool at our disposal to keep our community safe, and will ensure that the lights of the menorah burn all the brighter.”

Winnipeg police have also reminded the public to report any suspicious activity, encouraging them to call 911 for emergencies or 204-986-6222 for non-emergency situations. Community leaders are calling for urgent action from both government and police to enhance safety measures and protect vulnerable communities.

This increase in security comes at a time when antisemitic incidents have been on the rise globally, highlighting the need for vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard all communities against hate and violence. As the Jewish community in Winnipeg celebrates Hanukkah, they do so with a renewed commitment to their traditions and a united front against intolerance.
