Toronto Advocate Walks 50KM to Milton for Autism Awareness on Thanksgiving
On Thanksgiving Day, October 14, 2024, Toronto resident Qaiser Saghir Mayo will embark on a remarkable 50-kilometre walk from Toronto to Milton, aiming to raise awareness and support for Autism Ontario. This initiative is not merely a personal accomplishment; it is part of a broader movement dedicated to fostering understanding and compassion for individuals affected by autism.
Mayo, who works for a security company and has no personal ties to autism, has committed years to advocating for this cause. His previous walks included a 33 km trek to Mississauga in 2023 and a 45 km journey to Brampton in 2024, both of which attracted increasing community support. This year’s event marks his most ambitious undertaking yet, as he aims to connect cities and hearts across Canada.
Details of the Journey
The walk will commence at 7:30 AM in Toronto, with Mayo planning to reach Milton by 5:30 PM. He will be welcomed by local dignitaries, including Mayor Gordon Krantz and town councillors, who will celebrate the spirit of community and solidarity. “This walk is my way of standing with families affected by autism,” Mayo stated. “I feel the pain of parents who struggle every day. I want them to know they’re not alone.”
The event is open to all, inviting participants to join for any duration, from a few minutes to the entire distance. Mayo encourages attendees to demonstrate their support through their presence and to consider making donations to Autism Ontario. “Long walk, loud message,” he emphasizes, illustrating the walk’s purpose as more than just physical exertion; it is a call to action for awareness and support.
A Growing Movement for Change
Each year, Mayo selects a different city for his walk, aiming to build bridges and connections across communities. His vision is to establish a national tradition that promotes awareness, unity, and support for autism. He draws inspiration from the words of Anne Frank: “No one has ever become poor by giving.” This initiative represents a gift of time, energy, and heart, aimed at fostering a culture of compassion.
For those interested in getting involved, further information can be found on the Facebook page “Walk for a Great Cause” or by emailing [email protected] for registration, donations, or additional details. Donations can also be made directly through the Autism Ontario Donation Page.
Mayo’s determination and commitment highlight a significant effort to raise awareness for autism, demonstrating that every step taken in support of this cause contributes to a larger movement of understanding and compassion. As the day approaches, the community’s response will undoubtedly amplify the message of support that Mayo seeks to convey.
